Vikings Counselor Connection
Schreiber Guidance Department Newsletter February 2022
A note from the Director's Desk
Are we counting down to spring yet? By my count, winter is one-third over and we change the clocks in a little over six weeks! To those of you whose favorite season is winter, I humbly apologize for wishing it away.
Despite the cold, February is an important month for the school counseling profession. Each year, the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) designates the first full week in early February as National School Counseling Week. This will take place from February 7-11, 2022.
The purpose of National School Counseling Week 2022 is to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. Through National School Counseling Week, ASCA highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career (ASCA, 2022).
The theme for National School Counseling Week is "better together." School counselors are better together through teamwork and collaboration with students, parents, staff, administrators, and community members. When we practice teamwork, we promote growth and high student achievement.
We are fortunate in Port Washington to have school counselors at every grade level from Pre-K through 12th grades. We are "better together" because of the strong partnerships we have with teachers, administrators, parents, and the community. Our goals to promote high student achievement and wellness could not be achieved without these partnerships.
Thank you to all for your support. I wish you a safe and peaceful February.

Preparing for College Emotionally, Not Just Academically - Child Mind Institute
Tuition isn't the only thing that's relentlessly on the rise on American college campuses. Multiple studies show a significant increase in college mental health problems in the last few years, and campus counseling services report being overwhelmed with students seeking help. Why so much emotional distress, especially during the first year away from home?
Teens and Romantic Relationships - Child Mind Institute
As parents we often aren't sure what our role should be when a child is old enough to start dating. Should we be laying down the rules? Minding our own business? Teenagers can be prickly about their privacy, especially when it comes to something as intimate as romance.
Adolescentes y relaciones románticas - Child Mind Institute
