Welcome back to Room 180! Students have been hard at work and our classroom is starting to really come together as a community. Students are beginning to take on Classroom Leadership Roles and are considering what kind of classroom they would like to be part of this year. We will be using this brainstorming in upcoming weeks to write a Classroom Mission Statement that can guide our practice. We want this to be a classroom where students feel their voices are heard.


A reminder that in our weekly newsletters you will be hearing more about your student's weekly learning. Our newsletters will also provide information about upcoming events that are taking place at school and in our classroom. Newsletters will typically be shared on Mondays. Week in Review

Students are beginning to settle into our new routines and are getting more and more accomplished each day as a result. Everyone is working hard to help one another and to be a classroom of leaders, listeners, and learners. We are becoming a strong community.


Here are some of the things we have been learning:


  • Literacy: In literacy, students are being exposed to and practicing various reading strategies using tools such as "linger finger" (ie. noticing details). In order to do so, students are working on extending their reading stamina - don't rush! Stay on the page to see what else you can find. Reading fluency (ie. accuracy, rate, rhythm, and expression) continues to be modelled through our daily message, classroom book a day texts (see Instagram stories for daily updates), and our daily read aloud novel (ie. Sideways Stories from Wayside School). Students are working on developing writing strategies (ie. reading writing aloud, revising) and being able to tell or retell a story. What happened first, next, then, after that, etc.?


  • Phonemic Awareness: Words are made up of individual sounds. Students are practicing isolating the initial phoneme of words. The initial phoneme is the first sound we hear in a word. This week students practiced this skill using the words: big, road, jump, field, noise, pail, done, find, match, take, park, people, headphones, super, mindful, ribbon, turtle, kitchen, review, dollar, and cookies. To practice at home, say the words aloud together. What is the first sound you can hear?


  • Numeracy: In numeracy, students continue to explore identifying and using patterns to solve problems. Each day students are given a prompt that shows a perplexing problem - sometimes there is one right answer and sometimes there are many right answers. These problems generate discussions on HOW students determine answers. Students continue to explore algebraic expressions, using the "equal" and "not equal" symbols to compare numerals and numeric expressions.


We have also begun exploring Truth and Reconciliation concepts that we will continue to explore throughout the year. Students read a number of texts written and illustrated by indigenous artists. We read:


  • "Go Show the World" by Wab Kinew
  • "When We Were Alone" by David A. Robertson
  • "The Orange Shirt Story" by Phyllis Webstad
  • "Shi-shi-etko" by Nicola I. Campbell
  • "This is How I Know" by Brittany Luby


Students compared and contrasted these books and messages throughout the week. In honour of Orange Shirt Day students created their own orange shirts and considered the question, "At school, how should students feel?" Students brainstormed answers together and then recorded their favourite answers on an eagle feather which were hung on our Seven Sacred Teachings bulletin board. Students who wish to further explore these topics at home can access an Indigenous Awareness Week Library on Seesaw.


Students continue to assist in caring for and maintaining our classroom isopod colonies. Students are learning to identify requirements for animal care, focusing on the isopods need for food, water, shelter, and air and how we can properly care and provide for them.

Office Announcements

AHS New Daily Checklist

During the September 23rd, 2021 COVID-19 update, Dr. Hinshaw provided clarity regarding the new AHS Daily Checklist. Dr. Hinshaw communicated that she has added a new recommendation for any unvaccinated or partially vaccinated individuals when there is a positive COVID-19 case in their household. The new recommendation is that any unvaccinated or partially vaccinated individuals (including children under 12) should stay home for 14 days when a person who lives in the same house as them tests positive for COVID-19. Please make sure that students complete the AHS Daily Checklist each morning before returning to school.

Respiratory Illness Outbreak

The Medical Officer of Health has declared a respiratory illness outbreak at Christina Gordon Public School above. COVID-19 has been confirmed in some of the ill individuals. Outbreak control measures to limit further spread will be implemented in the school.


COVID-19 is passed from person to person through tiny droplets of liquid, spread by coughing, sneezing, talking, laughing and singing. This means that a person would need to have direct contact with droplets from a sick person or contaminated surfaces to be exposed to the virus.


There is no longer a legal requirement for quarantine of close contacts of cases of COVID-19. As a result, AHS Public Health is no longer identifying or notifying close contacts of cases of COVID-19.


  • Household contacts of a case of COVID-19 are strongly recommended to stay home for at least 14 days from last exposure to the person with COVID-19 if they are not fully immunized.

  • All staff and students must use the COVID-19 Alberta Health Daily Checklist daily to determine if they may attend school.


    • If staff or students develop symptoms as listed on the COVID-19 Alberta Health Daily Checklist please isolate at home immediately. Complete the AHS COVID-19 Self-Assessment tool or call Health Link at 811 as soon as possible to arrange for COVID-19 testing.

    • If booking a COVID-19 test, please use Outbreak Number 2021-EI-10324


  • If staff or students require medical attention, please call ahead to the health care provider or call Health Link at 811 so that safe care can be provided.

  • If staff or students need emergency medical care, call 911 and tell them that the ill person may have been in contact with COVID-19 so that safe care can be provided.


To help minimize spread of any respiratory illness including COVID-19, we always recommend the following:


  • Get immunized against vaccine-preventable respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19 and influenza. Immunization protects the individual and those who are not immunized. The best way to protect children too young for COVID-19 vaccine is to ensure all adults and older children around them are immunized.

  • If eligible for COVID-19 vaccine and not fully immunized with two doses, please schedule an appointment at www.ahs.ca/vaccine or by calling 811.

  • Ensure all routine immunizations are up to date, including annual influenza vaccine.

  • All household members should wash hands often with soap and water thoroughly for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available and hands are not visibly dirty.

  • Encourage household members to not touch their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough or sneeze. Throw used tissues in the garbage and immediately wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

  • Stay home if you’re sick. If your kids are sick, keep them home from childcare or school.

  • Clean and disinfect surfaces that are touched often and shared by everyone in your home such as door knobs, light switches and bathroom taps.

  • Wear a mask and keep your distance from others when in public places.

Terry Fox Walks

Students at Christina Gordon Public School will be having our annual Terry Fox School Walk during the week of October 4-7th, allowing for individual classes to complete the walk together as a classroom cohort. More information about individual classroom dates will be shared closer to the event. Please ensure students are dressed for the weather. Layers are always best! We encourage families to donate at: http://www.terryfox.ca/ChristinaGordonPublicSchool. Families can share the link and have students sponsored by friends and family who are near and far. Thank you for your support!

Inclusion Advisory Committee

Did you know that CG has an Inclusion Advisory Committee? They have been operating since 2019 as a sub-committee to the Parent Council and meet monthly to discuss ideas on how to make CG the most inclusive place to be! Some of the projects they have advised on are:


-Adding Inclusive books to our Learning Commons

-Purchasing more adaptive equipment for students

-Creating a calendar to recognize special dates such as Autism Awareness Day, World Down Syndrome Day, etc.

-Planning a fundraiser for the Wood Buffalo You Can Ride 2 Adaptive Bike Program

-Making an Inclusion video series to share with staff and students

-Providing enlarged Core Boards to classrooms as a communication tool

-Raising funds and planning the equipment needed to build an Inclusive Playground at Christina Gordon (Check out the video on our Facebook Page)


This year, they will be focussing on the Inclusive playground, but are also looking for other ways to make CG the most Inclusive place to be. They will also be looking for someone to fill the secretary position. If you are interested in joining the Christina Gordon Inclusion Advisory Committee, please send an email to Karla Power at karla.power@fmpsd.ab.ca.

General Reminders

  • Please make sure you have clearly labeled any coats, hats, water bottles, lunchboxes, etc. that you send to school. It is your child’s responsibility to keep track of these items throughout the school day.
  • Students are expected to read or be read to for a minimum of 20 minutes each night. Please make sure that students are returning books and book bags to school each Monday.
  • Students will bring home any handouts, information from the office, permission forms, etc. towards the end of each week in their Take Home Folders. Please make sure that all forms and the Take Home Folders are returned in a timely manner.
  • Our classroom Seesaw blog and student journals will be updated on a regular basis. Families are asked to check Seesaw for updates on a regular basis.
  • Our classroom is participating in the "Take Me Outside for Learning" Challenge and as such will be going outdoors rain, snow, or shine each Thursday. Please make sure that students come to school dressed for the weather with appropriate footwear, hats, sunscreen, water bottles, etc. as needed.
