CDS - First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP - March 18-March 22, 2019
Looking Back
Hello All,
Spring Break is here and I hope that you are sharing quality time with family and friends. Even before going away, several of the students were sharing their excitement and plans with friends and teachers, and I look forward to hearing more about these adventures upon our return.
Last week was an exciting one with a unique opportunity to spend time with visitors from Dalton New York - the school after which we are modeled. Mr. Musick (Director of Strategic Engagement and Professional Growth) and Ms. Brizzolara (Director of STEM) engaged with students, teachers and administration throughout the week. In addition, a Dalton NY fourth grade student was immersed in our program, bonding with our FP students and quickly making friends. Thank you especially to Mr. Baker and our G4 students for providing such a warm and welcoming environment to our guest. She was able to share about her experience at the NY Dalton School and this was valuable for us as students and teachers.
Mr. Musick and Ms. Brizzolara shared valuable feedback not only about what our school can work to improve upon, they also shared about the many things that we have in common. They were quite surprised about the benefits of being a young school and how quickly we are able to adapt and change. Being a school that is 100 years of age, this is often a difficult process that requires much time. They were able to point out to us what we can in common in the way of the Dalton Plan; what we should value in how we differ and how this applies to our community; as well as areas for improvement. Overall, it was an exciting and inspiring experience, and I look forward to how our relationship between our schools can grow.
Mr. T and Mr. Hill cheered on our FP Basketball team at YISS. Thank you to all the parents for sharing your support for the teams. More info, below, from Mr. T!
School photos of the students for the FP Yearbook are complete - just the teachers to go. Creation of the FP-produced-yearbook is something we are proud of. Thank you again to Ms. Fursova and the students in Yearbook Lab for all their efforts.
Thank you to all those participated in another successful Uniform-Free Friday. So many students participated and showed great community. We aim for these funds to support students’ education in underprivileged areas of the world.
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill

Grade 3 with Ms. Minot
In science we have been learning about forces, motion, and simple machines. Last week we learned about levers. Students identified what a lever is and created one. We then had a competition to see which lever would make a cotton ball go the farthest. Students excitedly used the scientific method by testing and redesigning their levers. This week we made wheel and axles and talked about the different ways they are used.
“I love trying different ways to make my lever,” said Cherry.
Mystery/Riddles Lab with Assistant Teacher, Ms. Drews
Students have been working on their question making skills when they ask about mysteries. They only ask yes/no questions to solve the mystery. Our high school volunteer, Eric, has also been helping us with clues. We also had a special guest from Dalton NY, Lily. (Picture shows tongue twister dictation race results.)
“I like using my head.” -Sophia (Grade 4)
“I like how I feel when we solve a question.” -Wendy (Grade 4)
March 16th, 2019 Basketball @ YISS with Mr. Tronsgard.
The CDS basketball teams took part in their first basketball jamboree of the year. With only a couple practices under their belt, students took to the court to challenge other teams from around Seoul. It was a great learning opportunity, as we were able to improve our individual skills, defensive strategies and get a greater understanding of the game. Our student should be proud of the way they played and the sportsmanship displayed.
The basketball teams will look to bounce back next month, as they travel to KIS Pangyo for our final basketball event of the year.
