From Mrs. Price

Buckalew Families,

It is so hard to believe that we have arrived at the last Buzz for the 20-21 School Year. What an incredible year. When I reflect on this year, I can't even begin to express the gratitude I feel for so many things. Having finished my 24th year in education and 11th year at Buckalew this year, I can say that this has been the absolute most challenging year in my career. Having said that, it has also been one of the most rewarding. I am so unbelievably proud of our amazing Buckalew staff and teachers who have shown up to work every single day to teach with a mask on, with social distancing, and with both in person and online students. They did an incredible job re-inventing and re-creating everything that was familiar into a new, safe way for children to learn on a daily basis.

I am so unbelievably proud of our amazing students for being so resilient in such a crazy time. From learning with masks on all day, to hand sanitizing and social distancing during entry and exit, lunch, recess, specials, and switch classes, our kids are INCREDIBLE! To feel their joy entering the building during a pandemic and processing the change and helping the adults by making it look easy, was sheer motivation to keep doing what we love to do...TEACH!

I am so unbelievably proud of all of our parents for supporting us daily and trusting us throughout this pandemic even when we didn't have all the answers yet (and still don't).

To end the school year with over 600 students in person and less than 50 students online seems like such an accomplishment from our beginning with 60% in person and 40% online. To end the school year with parent volunteers and kindergarten class celebrations last week, to our upcoming CLAP OUT with our 4th graders, we are all so proud of all the accomplishments of this year!

Elementary school is a time that most people don't realize, if you start in kindergarten and stay until 4th grade at the same school, you will spend the most time in your education at that elementary school than in your educational career as a student. As a k-4 student, if your child spends 5 years at the same campus, your child will not experience that again in a public system. We have been so blessed by all of you and I want to congratulate our incredible 4th graders who will finish this year and move on to intermediate school, with their class theme of "some have a story, we made history". Isn't that the truth!

As of June 1st, CISD will be lifting all mask requirements. Assuming all goes as planned, we will be opening our 21-22 school year "as usual" and I know we are all excited about that!

Please have a joyful and safe summer!

Have a GREAT summer,

Mrs. Price

May's Character Trait Responsibility

Everyone wants their child to grow up to be a responsible adult, but how do you teach responsibility? Dr. Karen Ruskin, author of The 9 Key Techniques for Raising Respectful Children Who Make Responsible Choices, explains that when it comes to teaching responsibility parents should:

  1. Start young
  2. Let children help in the home
  3. Show kids the way to complete age-appropriate tasks
  4. Model responsibility
  5. Give honest praise
  6. Manage your expectations and refrain from criticism
  7. Avoid rewards unless a task goes above and beyond
  8. Provide structure and routine
  9. Allow your child to accept negative consequences
