HOLY ROSARY NEWSLETTER
Term 3 Week 5 - 18 August
FROM MARK:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Another lovely assembly today, with the Preprimary Catherine Gang in absolutely fantastic form! To all of the children and to Jen and Julie, this has been just the best start to the day – thank you.
Our final School Mass with Father Peter went beautifully. It was a reverent and meaningful liturgy. Father Peter’s farewell gifts and cards will remind him of all his friends here. We look forward to seeing him back for the opening of the new Presbytery and Parish Centre. Thank you Father Peter for nine fantastic years! The Parish farewell mass is this Sunday at 10:00am and followed by morning tea. Consider yourself invited.
Opportunities to book for Fathers Day breakfast and the Newman College presentation can be found in the Holy Rosary Community News section.
Library Legend Holly Butson is hanging out for our Book Week Parade next week! It promises to be loads of fun! Holly has given some wise advice about the parade which I am sure you will appreciate. Can’t wait for next week!
Best wishes
Mark de Kluyver
Principal

HOLY ROSARY COMMUNITY NEWS
New reading resources
Our parent community has raised and donated $12,500 to purchase an amazing range of new reading resources for all our children.
The stories are fresh, engaging and fun – a great educational asset to our school.
A team of parent helpers also spent a number of mornings stamping and cataloguing the books – a bit of a 'One power ball…’ job (to quote Mr T) - but it meant getting the books into classrooms all the more quickly.

Library News
A HUGE thanks to Lydia and John Della Saul for assembling our new library display shelves- they look great! BOOK WEEK is next week and we are all so excited about the Annual Costume Parade next Friday 25th August. Students are encouraged to be creative, source ideas from books to make their own costumes or use what they already have at home. The theme is Escape to Everywhere and classes have focussed on a particular Notable Book and prepared some amazing artwork which is displayed in the Library. It is going to be a super fun week!

Special Year Seven Instrumental Programme at Newman College - ATTN: Year 6 Students
Year 7 Special Instrumental Program is being offered to students enrolled at Newman College for Year 7 2018, who show potential for learning and excelling on a chosen instrument. Entry is based on results of a musical aptitude test and a reference from the current Year 6 teacher. If selected, students will be given the opportunity to learn a band instrument or voice for free for the duration of the program - one year, as well as attend weekly band and choir rehearsals. Instruments available include flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, french horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion, double bass and voice.
All Year 6 students enrolled at Newman College for Year 7 next year will sit the Aptitude test during class time on Wednesday 23rd August, from 2:30-3:00pm. No preparation is required for the test.
Alternative testing dates for students absent at this time who wish to be considered for a place are invited to attend one of the following times at Newman College Marist Auditorium, Studio 1.
- Wednesday 23 August, 3:30-4:00pm
- Thursday 24 August, 3:30-4:00pm (repeat session)

‘Central Park Plunge’ - Please help support my fundraising efforts in support of hospitalised children whose families need help provided through Ronald McDonald house.
I’m not sure if you’ve heard of the ‘Central Park Plunge’ where teams of people commit to raise money for a nominated charity by abseiling 220m down the side of the Central Park building in the city centre. It’s a high-profile activity designed to get people out of their comfort zone (which is about 51 above my comfort zone). I’m taking the plunge on Friday the 9 September.
Below is a link to the website where people can make a tax-deductable donation.

CEWA are assisting me with the promotion of the WA Caritas Team ‘Run for Africa’ (or walk), however I am personally inviting schools and people to participate. Essentially, we are inviting all schools and parishes to join in on the day. There are different distances 4km, 12km, half marathon and the marathon. John, I and the kids will be walking the 4 km walk to raise some funds and awareness of the poverty and impact of climate change on the poor and marginalised in Africa - particularly in Sudan. Note: All entering the race must be there 30 minutes before the race/walk begins.
Start times for each race: 4km- 7.55am; 12km- 8.45am (walk); 8.20-8.35am (run); 21km- 7.30am; 42km- 6am
There will be a gathering at the end of the race for the event and hoping at this stage that we will receive food (light lunch/ cakes/fruit) donated in support of this appeal for our runners or walkers. Do you know any businesses in our school who would be interested in promoting their business by providing some light refreshments? This will be a big story for our schools and parishes! In fact, I am hoping to contact Today show as we are having a Sudanese student running in this race for the Caritas WA Run for African Emergency Appeal. So, if there is any family who would be able to assist, please let the Office know and they will forward my details to you.
