From the Desk of the Principal
It is hard to believe that the first quarter of the school year is over and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. On Monday, November 11, you will receive your child's first quarter report card. Prior to that, I encourage you to explore the information and resources available here. By understanding how your child's academic areas and learning behaviors are evaluated and reported, you will be able to glean a wealth of information from his or her report card.
November brings many opportunities to visit Lisbon Elementary School. Please take time to visit LES during American Education Week. More information is in this newsletter to help you plan your visit. We also encourage you to schedule time to meet with your child's teacher. Parent-Teacher Conferences provide a great way to connect, collaborate, and plan for future success and growth of your child in school.
Student/Parent Conferences:
On November 11, parents will have the opportunity to begin signing up for our fall parent/teacher conferences. These conferences will give you the opportunity to hear about your child's progress in the area of English/Language Arts (ELA). Parents will use HCPSS Connect to access teachers' availability on Monday, November 25th through Wednesday November 27th. Teachers generally schedule conferences on Monday and Tuesday from 1:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. If teachers offer conferences in the evening on both Monday and Tuesday, they are not required to work on Wednesday. Some teachers may schedule conferences on Wednesday.
Please be on time for conferences to be respectful of the conference before or after your conference time. If a conference needs to be extended please arrange an additional time to meet before the time your conference is to end. Conferences are 20 minutes in length. It is so crucial that every parent schedule a conference.
Related arts teachers, special educators, and related service providers will also be available to meet with parents who are interested in discussing their child's progress in that area. Please contact these individuals directly to schedule a mutually convenient time on November 25, 26, or 27.
Fourth-Grade students participating in the Gifted and Talented Math program will have the opportunity to schedule a time with Mrs. O’Connor during our conference window to discuss math progress. Our Fifth-Grade students participating in the Gifted and Talented Math program will have the opportunity to meet with Mrs. O’Connor during our February conference window.
Annual Salute to Veterans!
Our annual Salute to Veterans event will take place Monday, November 11th beginning with an assembly in their honor at 9:00 am in the Cafeteria followed by a breakfast in the Media Center. This is our school's way of honoring the Maryland Patriot Guard and the other brave veterans in our community. There will be honored guests in attendance from the MD Patriot Guard and our school community. We would like to honor any of our families with members currently serving or who have previously served in the armed forces.
If you will be participating in our school Veterans Day celebration, please complete the survey below and click the SUBMIT button when finished.
American Education Week:
The National Education Association was one of the creators and original sponsors of American Education Week. Distressed that 25 percent of the country's World War I draftees were illiterate and 9 percent were physically unfit, representatives of the NEA and the American Legion met in 1919 to seek ways to generate public support for education. In its resolution, the NEA called for: "An educational week ... observed in all communities annually for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs." The first observance of American Education Week occurred December 4-10, 1921, with the NEA and American Legion as the cosponsors. A year later, the then U.S. Office of Education joined the effort as a cosponsor, and the PTA followed in 1938. American Education Week is always celebrated the week prior to the week of Thanksgiving.
This year, American Education Week is being held from November 18-22. In keeping with tradition, Lisbon Elementary invites our families (adults only) to support education by joining us at school. While guests are invited to join us throughout the week at any time, various grade levels are also hosting special events throughout the week. Below is a chart of the dates, time and central focus of these events.
- K: Thursday, November 21 @ 11:30-12:00 Thanksgiving songs & crafts
- 1: Thursday, November 21 @ 10:00-11:00 STEM Activity
- 2: Wednesday, November 20 @ 10:00-11:00 STEM Activity

- 4: Tuesday, November 19 @ 10:00-11:00 Science Activity

We are excited to share that Lisbon is a part of the Coca-Cola Give program. Lisbon will receive cash for your Coca-Cola products! The best part? Donations don’t come out of your own pocket. When you make Coca-Cola purchases, you simply enter the product codes at: https://us.coca-cola.com/give/schools/ and we will receive a donation. We thank you in advance for selecting Lisbon Elementary and scanning or entering product codes from participating Coca-Cola products. If you are unable or would rather send in your Coca-Cola bottle tops (with the product code on it), we will enter them for you.
Help Wanted: The Book Fair is Almost Here!
The Book Fair will be here at school for parents and students to browse and purchase books right after Thanksgiving. Specifically, it will open during school hours from December 2nd through December 12th, and will also be open for parents to shop before and after our Winter Concerts on December 4th (Strings concert) and December 12th (Band, Chorus and Handbell concert). We are looking for volunteers who have completed volunteer training to help our primary students create their book wish lists during the week of December 2nd. 5 to 6 volunteers for each primary specials class are needed.

COLLECTIONS
We are collecting coats, hats, gloves and boots through November 22nd for Local and HCPSS children and adults. New or like new condition please. They can also be brought to Community Night.
At Movie Night on December 13th we will be collecting for Homewood School’s Recycled Treasures. Homewood is HCPSS special needs school in Ellicott City. The school does not have its own PTA and relies on the community and other PTAs for support. Each holiday season they have a "store" where students who have earned "cash" credits shop for their loved ones. The items are then wrapped for them by volunteers. All items are donated to Homewood. Last year Lisbon ES delivered a minivan full of items and we hope to surpass it this year! All good condition items are accepted; examples: purses, stuffed animals (MOST POPULAR), beauty products (unopened), housewares, clothes, toys, etc. We will send out more information as the event get closer.
