WHAT ARE WE LEARNING?

Kindergarten

Kindergarten will be focusing on the letters, eE, sS and the digraphs, sh and th. We will be working on comparing numbers and beginning to learn to add in math. We are learning the ways things move in science. We will exchange Valentines for Valentine's Day. We continue to talk about he weather and seasons. Kindergarten is hoping for a little snow.


If you are sending your child to the Valentine Dance on 2/13. We will be there. We look forward to seeing our students and having fun with them. Be sure to turn in the slip with the $5.

First

In math we are working on reviewing two-digit place values using addition and subtraction and counting up to 120. In OG building vowel teams. In science we are working on forces and motion and ELA is still main idea.

Second

Cauble's and Eliot's classes are headed to the YMCA the first week of February for water safety classes. Don't forget swimsuits and towels MTThF.


In Math we are continuing to solve story problems. These problems are going to be focusing on adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers. We are using blocks, pictures, words, numbers, and place value to solve these problems. We are working on mental math strategies, but the standard algorithm is not part of the 2nd grade expectations.


In ELA we are learning about historical figures and timelines. We are learning how to research our own historical figures so that we can teach each other.

Third

In reading we will continue to look at cause and effect. Math we will be looking at fractions introduce numerator and denominator and understanding what those mean. We will also look at area and perimeter. In social studies we will look at how events, individuals and ideas have influenced the history of local and regional communities.

Fourth

Math working with adding and subtracting fractions and multiplying fractions with a whole number, Science is rocks and minerals, and Reading is context clues, inferencing and explaining events and procedures, and interpreting information. We will also be completing and ABC project in class based on state monuments and symbols.


Valentine Dance on 2/13 5-7pm

Fifth

We are learning about economics which we will embed in ELA for the month of February. Science we will be starting to look at matter.


We have one field trip this month to the symphony on February 19, 2020

February Character Trait: Kindness and Compassion

Developing character is an essential part of promoting one's personal/social development and self-esteem. Each month, we recognize specific character traits through Character Trait of the Month. Teachers reinforce these character traits in the classroom during Morning Meeting to help students promote positive behavior and demonstrate good character!

Family Food Pantry

We have a family food pantry at Hurley. Please consider helping with this project by bringing in non-perishable food items and hygiene products. This will help us get this project started. If you are need of any assistance in this manner. Contact Ms. Flores, our Community In Schools liaison.
