HOW DO 3-YEAR-OLDS LEARN?

Big image

The Role of Play in PK3

Young children are eager learners, but because of their limited language, they learn more from hands-on experiences rather than from direct instruction. They learn by moving, touching, exploring, discovering — using their five senses and movement as they learn about their expanding world.

Play plays a very important role in the PK3 classroom. It should be incorporated into all centers to engage young children. The teachers play an important role in scaffolding make-believe play without interfering in it.

CHOICES FOR PK3 CHILDREN

FROM COERCION TO COMMUNITY, by Alfie Kohn

"If we want students to take responsibility for their behavior and learning, it is up to us to give them responsibilities. Children learn to make good decisions by having the chance to decide about what happens to them every day — not by following someone else’s directions. Research shows unequivocally that students learn more effectively and care more about what they are learning when they have some say about what is going on. (By contrast, students, like adults, suffer from burnout when they feel powerless.) "

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING

BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT - GUIDANCE

SECOND STEP

Second Step lessons help our PK3 children harness their energy and potential by teaching them to listen, pay attention, control their behavior, and get along with others.

CONSCIOUS DISCIPLINE

Conscious Discipline integrates classroom management and social emotional learnings. It utilizes every day events rather than an external curriculum and addresses the teachers' emotional intelligence as well as the childs'. The teacher can learn to respond to daily conflict in a way that transforms it into an opportunity to teach critical life skills, and watch every aspect of your classroom life improve!
