Girls on the Run is so much FUN!
The South Grove Girls on the Run wrapped up their season in December. Twenty girls were selected to participate in this nationwide program designed to teach life skills through interactive lessons and running games. The girls met twice a week and worked on skills to develop emotional and physical health. The program's highest point is when the girls complete their 5K race. South Grove's GOTR group ran the Jingle Bell 5K on December 13th at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis.
Another important part of Girls on the Run is understanding the value of community service. This year's service project as selected by the girls was to make small gifts for the residents at Beech Grove Meadows, a senior living center. The girls made cards and attached lip balm and tissue packets with messages such as "Merry Kiss-mas" and "Have a Chappy New Year!"
This program is meaningful to the girls and the teaching staff at South Grove who volunteer their time. Nine staff members serve as coaches. Coach Beth Walker states, "It's amazing to watch the girls grow in confidence personally and athletically throughout the program. It is always so special to see the look of accomplishment on the faces of the girls after they finish the 5k. I love being a part of Girls on the Run and empowering young girls to be successful in life!" Sixth grade teacher Kelly Agee says, "GOTR is a fabulous program to instill confidence and healthy behavior into our students. My favorite lesson is the one that Lisa Bair teaches on Media Literacy, where we show these very impressionable young ladies the truth behind those magazine photos they see. It's such a great program! Many thanks to Ellen Collinsworth for her constant inspiration and organization!"
