Week of November 18, 2019

ELD Potluck

Join us this Thursday, November 21, 2019 from 6-7 pm in the library if you have an ELD student at Kennedy. This is a chance to meet other families, learn how to help your student with reading, and prepare for upcoming conferences with teachers. See the flier below.

Elective & Club Showcase Night

Our second annual Elective and Club Showcase Night is Thursday, November 21, from 7:00-8:30 pm. Come and learn about many of our electives and clubs. Bring the whole family! There will be performances, projects to participate in, and games to play. Please help us get the word out to our feeder schools as well. This is a great opportunity to start getting to know Kennedy.

Attached below is a flier. On Thursday night we will have a schedule and map for the evening in the gym and in the main hallway when you enter from the Goodwin entrance so that you know where everything is located and at what time(s).

Report Cards

Grades are due tomorrow morning from teachers. We will lock them in which will update the g.p.a. that hasn’t been automatically updating. Then we print and go through each report card to look for any issues, have teachers correct them, and re-lock the grades again. We are hoping students will receive their report card seventh period on Friday, but if not, you can pick up report cards at conferences next week. Either way I will send out a message on Friday afternoon/evening.

8th Grade Baby Pictures

Attention All 8th Graders: Do you have baby pictures that you’d like to submit for the yearbook? Submit them to Ms. Vandermolen in room 314. Please make sure to write your first and last names in pen or marker on the back of the photo. Place them in an envelope before giving them to Ms. Vandermolen. If you have digital copies of your pictures, you can email them to Ms. Vandermolen at

Honor Roll Breakfast Invitations

If your student’s final g.p.a. for trimester one is a 3.75 or more then your family will be invited to attend the Honor Roll Breakfast on Tuesday, December 3, at 7:15 am. We will have breakfast, special t-shirts, certificates, and recognize each student for their achievement.

High School Placement Testing - 8th Grade Only

The school year is flying by! 8th graders will soon be selecting classes for high school in early 2020. Prior to that, the students take placements tests in Language Arts (in December) and Math (in January) to help with class selection. This week students will become familiarized with the format of the Language Arts Test, Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests (GMRT), and do some practice in their Language Arts class. The vocabulary part will be administered on Tuesday, December 3. The students get 20 minutes to answer 48 multiple choice vocabulary questions. There is no context in the questions, so the students either know the answer or don’t, in which case they may guess. On block day, either Wednesday, December 4, or Thursday, December 5, students will have 35 minutes to read short passages and answer 48 multiple choice questions.

School Tours

We will begin school tours for potential incoming Kennedy students in December. Some have asked why we haven’t started sooner like some of the other schools. The directive was to wait until after meet RCSD Night in January, so I was following the directive given. We are now all allowed to start touring. Here are the dates:

Thursday, December 5, 8:30 am, Library

Tuesday, December 17, 8:30 am, Library

Thursday, January 16, 8:30 am, Library

Friday, January 24, 8:30 am, Library

*For families who can’t make any of these dates/times and want more information about the school can contact the office to setup a meeting time with me.

Student of the Month

Congratulations to our October Students of the Month! Each teacher may select one student from each period they teach per month. Students can be recognized for: Academic Excellence, Respect & Responsibility, or Outstanding Citizenship. If you didn’t see your student’s certificate(s), you should ask where it is.

Big picture

There is no school on Monday, November 25, and Tuesday, November 26. Instead families can attend conferences to meet with teachers. Students are welcome to come along. Because we have so many students, conferences are on a drop in basis from 8 am to 3 pm. This means you can stop in and meet each of your student's teachers individually if you want. Staff will take a lunch break from 12-1 pm. Please note that the Friday before, November 22, is a minimum day per RCSD, so students will be dismissed at 1:30 pm. We will be on an alternative schedule that day.

Dress Code Reminders

Please be sure that your student is dressed appropriately for school and following school dress code rules. When students aren’t dressed appropriately it can be a distraction for other students. Some of the main things we are seeing are: jeans with excessively big holes/rips, students wearing red shirts and trying to hide them under sweatshirts, midriffs showing, and pajama bottoms. Your student will be asked to change and/or families will be called to bring a change of clothes.

Graduation Committee

The first meeting for the 8th grade graduation committee will be on Tuesday, November 19, from 6-7 pm in the gym right before the PTO meeting.

Shadowing at Kennedy

Help us spread the word! Incoming Kennedy 6th graders can setup a day to shadow at Kennedy and see what it is like. If they want to shadow they can contact the Kennedy Office or email me, We will be sending out flyers this week to the feeder schools about shadowing and touring.

After School Reminder

This is a reminder again that students need to leave within 10 minutes after school is over unless they are part of a school sponsored activity or program. Kennedy Middle School administration and staff are not responsible for student supervision after that point. We have students hanging out on campus until 5 or 6 pm, which is a problem. If your child cannot be picked up, the Kennedy Family Center and administrators would like to work with you to get your student into some type of supervised, structured after school program. Please reach out to us.
