Winter Sports Fundraiser is Underway!
This December marks the 38th year that Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School Physical Education department has hosted the annual Winter Sports Festival fundraiser. Each year the students of BBCHS will go to family, friends, and community businesses to ask for donations to the families in need within our school. Every year the students do a great job raising funds that have helped families in our school during the winter months. These donations have bought many grocery cards for families to stock their homes with food. They have paid rent, electricity, water, and gas bills to keep students and families safe. Funds collected have been used to purchase prescription medications, eye wear, and other medical supplies. Students raise money to help their peers cover some basic needs, however, there are usually some gifts added in as well.
For their efforts in collecting, students are rewarded with class competitions and relays their last week of class before break. There is also a pizza party awarded to the graduating class the brings in the most donations. Individual students collecting over $50 are also recognized by being able to choose an item off of a gift table that has been donated by area businesses. While the students appreciate the recognition, they all say the satisfaction comes from knowing someone in the building is getting the help that they need.
This fundraising event was started 38 years ago by Coach 'Barc', a man who was defined by his love and generosity towards every person who crossed his path. Coach Doug Barclay, along with former teacher Linda Linn, started this event in their physical education classes and have always beamed with joy when the Winter Sports Festival came around. Thanks to their efforts over $250,000 has been collected and given to those in our school community who need it most. In that honor we would like to name this fundraiser the Coach 'Barc' Winter Sports Festival.
Any contributions can be made to BBCHS care of Coach “Barc” Winter Sports Festival, or contact Bryan Smith at Bsmith@bbchs.org for more information.
