Summer Term Week 1 Monday 4th - Friday 8th April

This Week

The last term of Grade 5 got off to a flying start this week with Poetry Month. The children have enjoyed the delivery of the Daily Poetry Post from members of staff and 5PMC delivered an excellent class assembly on Performance Poetry.

The children have worked with diligence and perseverance to complete their Plant Projects and storybooks from last term and we are looking forward to sharing those with each other.

Language Arts

We have begun Poetry Month with great excitement and anticipation. On Monday Mr Hannah delivered the first of our golden envelopes which revealed a daily poem for our enjoyment. Each day we have enjoyed receiving another poem and taking it in turns to read aloud to the class.

During Language Arts lessons, we have looked at a range of poems from different authors. Our focus has been sharing what we like and dislike about the poems and our thoughts about how the poems makes us feel. We have also identified techniques which the poets have used including rhythm, repetition and language choices. It is incredible that the same poem is viewed so differently depending upon individual experiences and preferences. We look forward to beginning to compose our own poems next week.

In reading, we have been finishing off the books from last term and completing reviews. Next week we will begin studying new texts.

Congratulations to our wonderful writers.

This week in Mathematics we have started our unit of work on 'Triangles'. This is a very short unit in our last term in Grade 5, so we need to be purposeful in a short time.

This week we looked at the 4 types of triangles; isosceles, right-angled triangle, equilateral triangle and scalene triangles.

We also looked at recognising that the sum of the angles in a triangle is 180 degrees and this allowed us to find an unknown angle of a triangle when given the other two angles. We have also learn to recognise that when one angle of a triangle is a right angle, the other two angles add up to 90 degrees.

Our test on decimals will be coming home this Friday, so please look for the learning and celebrate the children's achievements.

As Ronan Keating once said,'Life is a Rollercoaster, Just gotta ride it.' And indeed we are riding it with enthusiasm!

This week we had our Entry Point and students worked in groups to come up with a ride suitable for children aged eight to ten. The brief stated that the ride must be unique and attractive to encourage more visitors.

The work was then pitched to a 'Dragon' from famed show Dragon's Den (though they looked suspiciously like the Grade 5 teachers) where students needed to present:

  1. The name of the ride

  2. What it would look like

  3. How it moves

  4. What is unique about the ride

  5. Why the ride would attract more visitors

At the time of writing this newsletter, the Dragons were still in discussions about who to invest this space!

Next week's Virtue of the Week is: Service

Service is giving to others and wanting to make a difference in their lives. It is looking for ways to be helpful instead of waiting to be asked. The needs of others are important to you as your own. When you work with a spirit of service, you give any job your best effort. You make a real contribution. People who want to be of service can change the world.
