Dr. Renato Lajara Named Interim Principal at CHS

CSD Director of Elementary Education Dr. Renato Lajara has accepted the temporary assignment of interim principal at Cheltenham High School for the 2019-20 school year.


A former administrator in Philadelphia, Dr. Lajara has served as a building principal at Kensington High School and John B. Stetson School. Throughout his career, Dr. Lajara has earned accolades for developing positive school culture, increasing attendance and showing academic growth in key content areas. He served a successful term as the interim principal Myers Elementary during the 2018-19 school year.


Dr. Lajara earned his bachelor's (elementary education), master's/certification (educational administration) and doctorate (educational leadership) degrees from Gwynedd Mercy University.

Junior India Brooks Participates in Department of Defense STEM Research Institute

Junior India Brooks spent time this August at the two-week residential Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Joint Science and Technology Institutes (JSTI) for High School students in Aberdeen, Md. Spending hours in a lab and working with water samples from the Flint River, Chesapeake Bay and Frog Mortar Creek, Brooks and her team worked on microbiome-based antibiotic discovery for warfighters to diminish the impact of "super bugs." Alumna Brissett Takes Silver at Pan Am Games in Lima

USC Trojans sprinter and 2017 CHS graduate (and former Wyncote Elementary student) Chanel Brissett had a successful run at this summer's Lima 2019 Pan American Games, earning a silver in the women's 100m hurdles (12.99) and a bronze as the lead-off leg of the USA’s 4x100m relay (43.49). Read more>

CHS Students Learn about STEM through Music at Drexel Program

During the first week in August, CHS juniors Venus Agbadan, Aidan Frankenberg, Zhao Gu Gammage and sophomore Dan Hayes participated in Drexel University’s Summer Music Technology (SMT) program at Expressive and Creative Interaction Technologies (ExCITe) Center. Read more>

CSDF Award Teacher Innovation Grants


At opening day on Tuesday, Aug. 20, the Cheltenham School District Foundation awarded 33 innovation grants to 38 faculty members from all seven CSD schools. Grants totaled $25,252. Some of the grants will fund projects such as extending opportunities for English language learners, project-based experiences, enhancing social skills and interpersonal connections of K-12 students and encouraging play and mindfulness.

Schools are closed for the Labor Day recess on Friday, Aug. 30 and Monday, Sept. 2.

Monthly early dismissals are the second Wednesday of the month. The District has early dismissal on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Schools will dismiss at the following times:


  • Cheltenham High School | 1:30 p.m.
  • Cedarbrook Middle School | 2:10 p.m.
  • Elkins Park School | 2:40 p.m.
  • K – 4 Schools | 2:45 p.m.

Family Tech Talk / Film Screening

On Saturday, Sept. 28 from 9:30 a.m. - noon, Wyncote's Calvary Church is hosting a "Family Tech Talk" that will include a showing of the documentary "Screenagers" and discussion for parents and young people to learn about navigating the digital age. The award-winning film delves into the vulnerable corners of family life and depicts messy struggles over social media, video games and academics.
