Dear HAWK Families,
Our December Holiday concert was simply beautiful. Dr. Morton always does a wonderful job of preparing our Hawks to entertain us with their singing, dancing, and smiles!! Thank you to all of our families who attended!
Happy January!! As we look to January, our character trait focus is COURAGE. Courage is the quality of mind and spirit that enables a person to face hardship or danger with confidence and resolution.
I recently reread the book, Wonder. The main character has a rare facial deformity that greatly impacts his interactions with others. The story is told from multiple perspectives. Without giving it away, I can share that the main character is a boy of great courage and kindness.
As “be kind” and “stay kind” have been our mantras here at HGE, I only felt this book to be a fitting testimony to all that we as human beings should be for one another. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from this book:
“Kinder than is necessary. Because it's not enough to be kind. One should be
kinder than needed.”
“Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define
us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness.”
“MR. BROWNE'S SEPTEMBER PRECEPT: WHEN GIVEN THE CHOICE BETWEEN
BEING RIGHT OR BEING KIND, CHOOSE KIND.”
Wouldn’t this world be a better place if well all lived by these premises? It is our goal at HGE to have each and every HAWK consider kindness and act with kindness and courage on a daily basis. It is simply the right thing to do.
Proud to be a Hazel Grove Hawk!

Meet Mrs. Graham
Hi! I’m Lori Graham and I am the Reading Specialist at Hazel Grove. This is my 22nd year of teaching in Lee’s Summit and my 12th year as a Reading Specialist at HGE. I have the privilege of providing reading intervention to many of our students in small groups. I also work with teachers to collect and analyze data that helps to determine specific needs for their students. I love what I do because I get to work with all grade levels, K through 5, and I get to work with some of the best teachers in the district! By far my favorite part is working with the sweetest kids and watching them become strong, confident readers!
