Milestones are worth celebrating!
Twin Oaks Families:
This week marks the 40th Anniversary of my marriage. Talk about a serious milestone! I'm not really sure that the 22 year old me had any concept of what she was getting herself into, when she said "I do" four decades ago. It would be impossible to capture all the lessons learned from so many years as Mrs. Miller, so I won't even try. I will however offer a handful of gems that may give others out there hope for a long, happy marriage. Here goes: Have a short memory. Embrace change. Lead with your heart.
It goes without saying that disagreements and hurt feelings are a part of any relationship. My advice is to apologize, and then to genuinely let go of your grievances. Holding grudges only creates more pain for all. Get over it, put it in your rear view, and move forward with an open mind and heart. In other words, have a short memory.
It's always great to have a plan, but don't be so stuck on your goals that you miss the opportunity to follow an intriguing path. I remember doing an amazing 9600 mile driving trip around the country a few years back. Every time we took a detour onto one of the "blue highways," we were enchanted by what we found. If you don't get off the main road, you might miss something amazing. In other words, embrace change.
Never give up on the love that brought you together in the first place. Trust your younger selves, the ones who looked into each other's eyes with stars. You're still in there. Though time may have altered the vessel, the contents have aged like fine wine. Pop the cork on that baby, and drink a toast to every single bump in the road that got you to this place. In other words, lead with your heart.
Marriage is not easy. It's not perfect or flowery. It is exactly as it should be, a work in progress, a painting that is never quite finished, a continuum that holds so much promise one can't help but be excited about what lies ahead, just around the corner.
What's happening in School this week: Our school-wide theme this month is Diversity. During our counseling lessons this week, I will be sharing stories from different cultures and perspectives. My goal is for students to think about our differences as opportunities to grow and learn.
