Who Is Wayne Gretzky

Wayne Douglas Gretzky was born on the 26 of January 1961 in Brantford, Ontario. Gretzky is known to be one of the greatest hockey players to ever play the game. He was given the nickname, "The Great One", to represent his skill on the ice. He currently holds approximately 61 NHL records, and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on the 22 of November 1999. The number, 99, will never again be worn again by another NHL player in respect to what "The Great One" has brought to the hockey organization

Apperances Matter- And Remember to Smile

On February 4th 1987, when Wayne Gretzky came on the ice to play in his first game against his old team, the St. Louis Blues, boos rained down from the crowd. Gretzky kept a cool head like always, and just played the game he knew how to play. Knowing that by getting agitated, his game could be affected, he decided to keep a positive attitude and ignore the negative comments.

Lead From the Back- And Let Others Believe Their Infront

During the 1996-1997 season, even when Gretzky was not captain, he continued to lead his team. He let teammates, like Mark Messier, soak in some of the limelight while he influenced others from the behind.

Keep Your Friends Close- But Keep Your Rivals Closer

One of Gretzky's biggest rivals was Mario Lemieux. Lemieux played on the Pittsburgh Penguins, playing Gretzky many times during his career. Even though these two superstars played against each other, they had a teammate to teammate relationship like no other. The two played together as teammates in the 1987 Canada Cup, both placing top in the standings for leading scorers!
