Kuna families

We are grateful to you and our community for your continued support of our Levy for Learning, which was approved Tuesday. These funds will help us continue our focused improvement on reduced class sizes, ensuring students have the learning materials they need and key safety personnel and projects will continue.

Our school board made some important decisions Tuesday that impact the rest of the school year. In this week's newsletter, I have some updates.

Welcoming visitors back to our schools after Spring Break

This year, visitors were not allowed in our schools as a precaution to avoid having to quarantine students and staff because of contact with a COVID positive visitor to the school.

This has limited student access to college recruiters, guest speakers, etc. and to our parents to volunteer or visit. With the decrease in the spread of the virus, we are able to welcome back limited visitors.

Tuesday the Board approved a change to our operating plan to allow for visitors at the discretion of school principals. Visitors will be screened before entry and must follow the same safety protocols required for staff including wearing a mask.

Two schools are piloting the screening procedures and this change will take effect after spring break. Look for more information from your child's school or contact the office after break.

One day added to Spring Break for students; Students return March 30

Families will get one extra day of Spring Break: Monday, March 29. (Don't worry unlike last year, we plan to be open after Spring Break!)

Teachers will work that Monday, March 29. Elementary staff will be preparing their reading units using the new curriculum (thanks to our 2019 Levy for Learning) and secondary staff will be getting ready for 4th quarter's change to add the option of students attending 5 days a week.

This teacher in-service day on March 29 will replace the one previously planned for May 14 for secondary calendars. Elementary calendars will still have May 14 as a professional development day so that they can begin planning class lists for the following school year. *This is a change from information previously shared. We are updating calendars and will share them in a future newsletter.

KHS, FMS, KMS parents please make your 4th Quarter schedule choice by Monday!

In case you missed it, the school board accepted a recommendation from the 6-12 Advisory Task Force to offer families the choice to send their middle and high school students every day or remain in the Blue/Gold hybrid. Initial Point will remain on its current schedule.

If you want to change your child to an every day schedule, you must:

  • Log into your Tyler Parent Portal Account or Student 360 app
  • Look for “New optional e-Forms are available” click “view”
  • Click on the “Q4 6-8 Selection” or “Q4 9-12 Selection” and
  • Make your choice

Principals Brian Graves and Tim Jensen recorded a video to help parents understand what instruction would look like in both schedules and a FAQ developed. There is a misconception that students attending every day would experience the repeat lessons when Blue and Gold students attend in person.

This is not the case. The expectation is for continued learning in both schedules every day which both principals discuss.

Some of our teachers have been using a "every day" model during the hybrid. The video below explains how one teacher has done that since the start of the school year.

Above & Beyond Andrew Horning

Starting April 2 Friday is early release for KHS, KMS, FMS

In normal years, our weekly schedule includes early release to allow for teachers to meet and review student performance information and plan to adjust instruction. In the past, this has been a Wednesday.

When elementary returned to five day instruction, this early release was re-established but shifted to Friday.

With secondary schools expanding to every day, this time will be re-established for KHS, KMS & FMS on Fridays.

Here's what the bell schedules will be:

  • Elementary schools 1:35 (no change)

  • Kuna Middle School 12:16

  • Swan Falls High School 12:08

  • Kuna High School 12:10

  • Fremont Middle School 12:30
