Yard Sign Fundraiser
Show your support for Hanawalt with a special edition yard sign. Even though we can't end the school year together, we are still Hawks together! Proceeds from these signs will support the PTA general fund for 2020-2021 school year to ensure when we go back to school, we will be able to fully support staff and students. Signs are $25 and can be purchased through this link. Stay healthy, hawks!!
Community Outreach
Hello Hawk Families,
My name is Maggie Thompson and I am a senior at Roosevelt High School, and secretary of the National Honor Society. Each week of our extended break NHS has been encouraging our club members to participate in a community engagement activity. Last week we did world of hearts, where students put up a display of hearts on their windows, this week the activity is "going on a bear hunt" where students place a stuffed bear in their window. Going into May, we will be asking our members to write kind letters to their neighbors and then we will do chalk art on sidewalks!
Our club promotes these activities through images on Instagram @trhsnhs. The reason I am reaching out to you is so that the students at Hanawalt can go exploring with their families to search and find these activities, if they would like. They can even direct message pictures of themselves to the @trhsnhs account to be featured on our Instagram page!
Thank you so much! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Maggie Thompson
Reminder: Attention Fifth Graders
1. Art Project: Legacy Piece
The 5th grade gift is a wonderful opportunity to leave your mark on your elementary school! Each year 5th graders create a piece of artwork to be displayed in the halls of Hanawalt. This year, our methods of creation will look a little different but this should still be a piece of artwork that you are proud of.
- Think of your favorite memory at Hanawalt.. This might be your first day of school, a fieldtrip, a favorite memory with a teacher or a classmate, something you liked to draw while in the Art Studio, or even a random doodle that shows off some of your personality. Any of these things are the inspiration for our 5th grade gift. Your job is to create a design that shows your favorite memories or a design that represents you.
- This can be done with ANY material you have on hand: Pencil, colored pencil, marker, crayon, collage materials. This can be on ANY kind of paper that you have on hand, in any size.
- When you complete your design, you will need to take a picture of it and send it to Kenzie.debolt@dmschools.org by May 10th, 2020!
- When all of your designs are sent to me, they will be printed and collaged into a giant letter H to be hung in the office!

Hello all!
Hope everyone is feeling good. I miss everyone's smiling faces and cheerful morning greetings. We have gotten a good start on summer cleaning doing what we can without bothering anybody's personal property. Since the weather has been so good I spend a lot of time outside. Since the camp grounds are closed I still go to the lake and walk the nature trails. It's really nice watching the trees bloom the wild flowers blooming. I even see an occasional fox have seen a bald eagles nest. Looking forward to seeing everyone again when they finally open the schools so you can come in and get your belongings. Stay healthy and enjoy the outdoors when you can.
Miss you all!
Mrs. Thomas
Hi friends,
I am really missing Hanawalt! I miss seeing all the staff and especially all the kids. I've been staying busy reading, putting puzzles together, crocheting, crafting, and spending time with my family. We have a new member to our family, a puppy. Rusty is his name and he is part Chihuahua and part Shih tzu.
With this beautiful spring weather my husband and I go out for rides and hikes on the weekends. This past weekend we went to Saylorville Lake. It was beautiful! I could see downtown Des Moines from the top of the dam.

Missing everyone at Hanawalt! Trying to keep busy. Doing a lot of baking to give away to family and friends. Stay safe and hope to see everyone in August!

Hello Hanawalt families! I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying this awesome weather we are having!! I am the new associate! Even though I was just starting to get to know everyone, I miss you all so much. I especially miss all the smiles and hugs!
My family and I have been trying to find a good balance of work and play the last month and a half. We spend our days doing some school work that my 7th grader has, playing games (Rummikub is our favorite), walking our labradoodle and working outside. We live on 6 acres so there is no shortage of work to be done. We are currently clearing out some areas and planting grass.
I look forward to seeing everyone in the fall! Have a great summer!

Last Day of School Parade
Mark your calendars for HANAWALT'S LAST DAY OF SCHOOL CAR PARADE on May 28th at 6pm! Join us in closing out this school year by celebrating the work Hanawalt's staff and community has done over the last 2 months!
The teachers and staff will be waving goodbye for the summer in the Hanawalt lawn and parking lot as we make our traditional pick up line through the lot, with the line starting on 56th Street. Please feel free to decorate posters or just honk, yell and wave! We hope to see you all there!
