Sharing Learning with Screencasts
Innovative Ideas and Practices from ICCSD Educators
Many teachers have discovered how useful it can be to create screencasts for their students - whether it's a how-to video for citing sources, a review lesson for students who missed class, or an example of a successful assignment. But more and more teachers are now putting the screencasts in their students' hands!
Students Screencasting Across Grade Levels
K-6 Tami Clemens' 2nd graders worked together to share their learning about pets - using WeVideo, students recorded their voices over images to create presentations. The same could be achieved with Google Slides and a tool like Screencastify. Focusing on the skill of paraphrasing, students created screencasts in lieu of giving a presentation in front of the class and then shared them to view each other's work. See an example here! | 9-12 Amy Seidel's Spanish 4 students wrote children's stories to review the past tense and narration. They then uploaded the electronic version and used Screencastify to record themselves reading their stories. Multiple takes encouraged students to improve pronunciation and polish their product before sharing with others. See examples here and here. |

Tools to Try
Collaboration Google Maps can be used for more than getting directions. Using My Maps, students can collaborate on a personalized, shared map. Groups studying the regions of the US could mark the map with landmarks and link to relevant videos. Students studying music could mark the homes of famous musicians and link directly to their songs. | Creativity | Communication Many educators use Skype to connect their classes to the world - and now Skype has built services specifically for this purpose. Connect with experts, take virtual field trips, meet authors, or participate in a Mystery Skype - where classes "meet" each other and have to guess where they live based on clues! |
