The Connection Week 1 Term 2
Huapai District School 6th May 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Welcome back to term two. As explained last term, this term, John Petrie is not at school as he is on sabbatical.
Over the holidays I was lucky enough to go to Adrenalin Forest just out of Tauranga with my family. Heights are not my favourite, but I am always up for fun and keen to role model grit for my children. All was going well until I got stuck at 16m with no way forward and no way back. A swing forward hadn’t returned back the full way and I had no way of reaching it. The last trapeze had swung back to the previous tree. I was well out of my comfort zone and unsure. It took some serious self talk (and a few tears) to find a way out of my situation. Up there, I was reminded of the joke “what do a woman and a tea bag have in common?” The answer is “you don’t know how strong they are until they are put in hot water”. Now that I am back at school, I feel that we could extend this joke to be “What do Huapai kids and a tea bag have in common”. We are often tempted to help our children avoid the hot water, avoid the challenge in the hopes to keep them safe. But our Huapai children are so much stronger than we give them credit for sometimes. I encourage you to talk with your children this term as so many opportunities arise for them to dip their toes into the unknown, to take up the challenge, to be brave and to grow.
Our first full school opportunity for this is at athletics next week. Seniors are Monday at the domain and juniors are Tuesday here at school.
So as Keryn and I roll up our sleeves ready for a big term, we want to thank you for being our support crew!
(As for the trees, I climbed up the tree even further and jumped to grab the little pulley rope that would bring the swing closer to me - there’s always a way.)
Regards,
Maree Lloyd

Athletics Days
This year we have moved athletics to Term 2. This is for two reasons. 1) To reduce the sun exposure for our students as there is limited shade and 2) to hopefully free up time in Term 4 to run a school triathlon. The dates for athletics are:
Seniors years 5-8 Monday 10th May at the Huapai Domain and Juniors (years 1-4) Tuesday 11th May here at school. The rain dates for these events are the Monday and Tuesday of the following week. If we are unable to hold the athletic days in Term 2, we will look to run them in Term 4.
Do You Have A Child With Neuro-Diverse Learning Needs Or Know Someone Who Does?
If so, come along to the first HDS Neuro-Diverse Whanau Support Group and meet other parents/caregivers who know what it’s like to raise a child with Neuro-Diverse needs. The group will be a place for parents to share their experiences and ideas, and to gain support from one another.
Date: Tuesday 18th May, 2021
Time: 9.00am
Location: Huapai District School Staffroom
If you would like to come but cannot make this time/date, please contact Kelly Charteris: kelly.charteris@hds.school.nz
We will look at picking dates and times that work better in the future for people who want to attend.
HDS Breakfast Club
Breakfast club is up and running. This is to give children an opportunity to meet and make new friends. We provide the children with a breakfast of cereal and milk, bread and spreads (margarine, honey, peanut butter and vegemite). All food will be provided by the school.
Please speak to your children about this, and let us know if your child/children are interested in being part of it. We will require you to give permission via KINDO, and notify us of ANY allergies or special food requirements your child might have.
No child can attend the breakfast club until consent has been given on KINDO.
The breakfast club runs from 8.30am each morning, for approximately 20 minutes in Studio 2.
If you would like to be part of the team and could roster on one morning to help serve the children, that would also be much appreciated.
