Focus on Learning at Arts Middle
We have a tremendous focus on student learning at Arts Middle School. Our teams are given 40 minutes a day outside of their prep time to collaborate with their team on student learning and our learning unit.
Here are the parts of our learning unit:
- Teachers meet in teams to plan the unit with our Prior-to-Learning Protocol
- Teachers discuss and select priority standards
- Teachers unwrap the standards into learning targets
- Teachers create success criteria for mastery of the standard
- Teachers plan out the Learning Unit
- Teachers create common formative assessments for the beginning and end of unit
- Teachers administer the pre-learning unit CFA
- Teachers meet in teams to discuss the data and take action
- Teachers use Flex Blocks to review prerequisite skills and teach vocabulary
- Teachers use High-Quality Instruction to teach the priority standards
- Teachers discuss High-Quality Instruction with their teams
- Teachers administer a mid-unit assessment, meet in teams to discuss, and use a Flex block
- Teachers use High-Quality Instruction to teach priority standards
- Teachers administer the end-of-unit CFA
- Teacher collaboratively score work with team
- Teachers meet in teams to discuss results from CFA and take action to support all students
- Teachers use Flex Blocks to assist the students who need more time and support and extension work
These steps occur every Learning Unit. The teacher’s collaborative time is aligned perfectly with what the students are doing in the classroom. The Learning Unit not only is focused on student learning but it is also aligned with Learning Forward’s National Teacher Professional Learning Standards.
I hope you can see the tremendous focus we have on Learning at Arts Middle! Even during these times!
