First Week Recap
Dear Atholton Families,
The first day of school is an exciting time for students, parents, and teachers for all very different reasons (Lol!). As students arrived on Tuesday, I had the pleasure of meeting members of the senior class in the “senior” parking lot. Several arrived early to mark their status as the new BKOC (big kids on campus). One group ate doughnuts in the back of a pickup truck. Another group took out a corn hole set and began playing. They even invited me to play! As I moved to the front lobby, more and more students arrived and excited to see their friends. I wish I could bottle the excitement in the air the first day of school. I firmly believe it our job to maintain that enthusiasm year-round!
As this year begins, whether you have a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior, I would like to share a quote from operatic tenor, Robert Breault – “Enjoy the little things because one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” These four years go fast! As parents of high schoolers, you are perfectly poised to see just what that means for your child(ren). This week was one of those moments. As the new principal of Atholton, I had the opportunity to visit English classrooms and engage with students. They asked questions, expressed their opinions, and listened with an open mind. I was very impressed!
This week will mark the 17th anniversary of 9/11. During our Back to School Night, you may have noticed the flags that lined our campus. The Young Americans for Freedom club, to commemorate 9/11, took time to place each flag. In addition, they will distribute 9/11 Never Forget pins during lunch on September 11. Additionally, I will call for a moment of silence during first period tomorrow morning.
Also this week, on Wednesday, is our Senior Kickoff. We will spend the day preparing the for the important year that lies ahead. We have been purposeful in our silence about this event. We want it to be a surprise.
Lastly, you should have received information regarding our new safety protocols. In an effort to enhance school safety and make sure everyone on Atholton High’s campus has a legitimate purpose, our front doors are equipped with a CCTV camera and a buzz in latch operated by front office staff.
Once the final bell rings each morning, entrance doors from the vestibule into the main building are locked and visitors may only enter the school through the main office for the remainder of the school day.
If visitors do not have a picture ID they cannot visit the Health Room, Student Services or any classroom. This is purely a safety issue and we hope that our school continues to be a warm and friendly place. Thank you so much for your cooperation.
Warmly,
Robert A. Motley
Principal
