From the Desk of Mr. Roote

With our annual open house on the schedule for next week, I thought I would add a bit of levity to our work and identify, in David Letterman Top 10 fashion, things to avoid during open house next week:
  • Do not power eat garlic and onions and plan to practice breathing exercises in our halls.
  • Avoid giving noogies as a welcome gesture.
  • Do not turn your classroom or hall into an Escape Room.
  • You are discouraged from offering younger siblings a chance to pet the "unknown" creature in the tank that rarely bites.
  • Can we avoid, "Would you taste my coffee to see if it may have poison in it?"
  • Please don't bring your bacon grease to dump down our drains.
  • Avoid identifying the assistant principal as a younger more fit version of the principal.

In all seriousness, we are very proud of our facility, instruction and even more proud of our students. We cherish the time to celebrate our work with you and we look forward to the chance to share a bit about ourselves and what drives us personally and professionally. Like you, many of us are moms, dads, husbands, wives, grandmothers and grandfathers. We want for yours what we want for ours!

From the Desk of Mr. Wagner

As we are almost 5-weeks into the school year, I wanted to take the opportunity to revisit growth mindset. If you are unfamiliar with growth mindset thinking, you may want to watch Carol Dweck’s Ted Talk, The power of believing that you can improve. In it, she discusses research that demonstrates students with a growth mindset (performance can be improved and learning comes from failure) outperformed students with a fixed mindset (character, intelligence, and creative ability are static givens which we can’t change in any meaningful way). The concept of growth mindset aligns directly with the social and emotional learning work we are doing and Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. One of the key takeaways for me is that students with a growth mindset focus on the learning. Learning is the goal, as opposed to completion of a task or a number grade. This is a challenge for our learners as they may not always be motivated by the value of learning and is a paradigm shift that would be valuable to focus on.

Attention parents: It is that time of year when the saying starts to go around: "Absences Add Up!" Just three absences in a month is an indicator of chronic absenteeism. The research says, "Chronically absent students are more likely to experience poor outcomes later in life, from poverty and diminished health to involvement in the criminal justice system." Despite the gloomy outlook painted by the quote, we have been very successful at NHS inspiring positive change. To that end, we have formed an Attendance Outreach Team on standby to support your efforts increasing school attendance. Please reach out to a member of the team so they can advocate on your behalf to improve attendance. They are:

If you have collected our new field trip permission form please turn them in to the main office to be logged into a database that will track them for the year and be shared with all staff. The idea is to not ask a student to turn in multiple forms in a year.

I thought you might get a kick out of this article: How Teachers Are Like the Greatest NFL Team, the New England Patriots. For now, my only feedback to the author would be to insert Bills every place it says Patriots!

The Instructional Corner

Consider two of the ten qualities of successful lessons presented on September 20th:

  1. Never lose track of the lesson’s objective.
  2. Listen and invite students to do most of the thinking.

It is easy to get lost in our lessons. We each have a passion for the material we teach and are often faced with many “teachable moments” throughout our lessons, which if capitalized on, can cause us to lose focus of our learning targets, taking up valuable learning time. However, if that “teachable moment” is sincerely worth mentioning, then it is worth planning a learning target around it on a different day. Sometimes, too much teaching may blur the learning. By keeping our learning targets in our minds as we plan and as we are delivering instruction, we will make more appropriate decisions about what to cover. The following link, “You just listened, so then I could figure it out” provides a useful illustration of this teaching and learning mindset (thank you Lindsay LaPaglia for sharing).

Alumni Spotlight: Alexandra Schober

Alexandra is a 2010 graduate of NHS. Alexandra graduated Magna Cum Laude, was a hall of fame recipient, and received numerous academic scholarships from local organizations such as the Rotary Club, as well as larger national corporations such as the Better Business Bureau. She was actively involved with the Interact Club, Student Council, and National Honor Society, amongst many others. For sports, she participated year-round in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track.

After high school, Alexandra attended Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences from 2010-2012 majoring in Pharmacology (no degree conferred). She then attended SUNY Albany from 2012-2014 majoring in Human Biology. She received a Bachelors of Science with Honors, Magna Cum Laude with Tau Sigma and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies admittance. She is currently attending the Albany Medical College majoring in Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology with her PhD expected to be completed in May of 2018. Her research primarily focuses on finding treatment options for individuals who have suffered an ischemic stroke. Apart from this, she is an adjunct professor at the small community college, Mildred Elley, teaching pharmacology and psychology, and spends some time teaching neuroanatomy and pharmacology to graduate, physician assistant, and medical students. After receiving her doctorate, she plans to move on to either working for the government as a research scientist or continue working in academia as a college professor teaching and running her own lab studying sports-related traumatic brain injury.

Words of Wisdom: (Her own words.) The one thing I’ve learned over time is that anything you want to do career-wise is possible. Persistence and perseverance will get you any job you desire but only when it’s paired with passion. Confidence and self-awareness is essential because you will fail along the way, but how you turn that failure into success is what matters. I failed out of college my sophomore year and 2 years later, landed a spot in a PhD program that had a 3% chance of acceptance, of which I can only owe to working hard. So don’t ever give up if you truly love what you do; no matter how many times you fail and no matter how many people tell you that you can’t.
