August 2022 Principal Newsletter

August 16 Edition

First Day of School Arrival

Similar to last year, all students will come onto the blacktop when the gates open at 8:25 to meet their teachers at their line. Teachers will then take their students to their classrooms to begin their day. Many students, especially our older ones, will have no problem locating their teacher and class. In order to support our younger students and those having difficulty, we will have additional staff on the blacktop to help students find their teachers. It went very well last year. Families are welcome to come on campus to help their children locate their lines, if needed.

Student Safety and Responsibility Expectations

Once students are dropped off at Jackson Ave, but before school starts is a perfect time for students to demonstrate being a Stingray Star. After school is a second opportunity to show Stingray STAR behavior too! Please support our efforts by reinforcing the following expectations through conversations at home:

Stingray STARs:

Scholarly: I think about the choices I am making, and I always try my best.

Trustworthy: I make the same choice when an adult is looking and when they are not.

Accepting: I am kind to the people around me.

Responsible: I follow the school rules and I take care of the things around me.

In the morning and after school, we need our students to be safe by staying away from the road and driveway, choosing to walk or stand with friends/classmates (avoid running and chase games), and using kind words/appropriate language.

Stingray Staff Updates

We have a number of new staff members joining us here at Jackson Ave. Please welcome kindergarten teacher, Christie King, second grade teacher, Talia Wang, science specialist, Alexis Kline, and her long term substitute beginning the year, Rebecca Langstaff, and para-professionals Shweta Trikutam and Lavanya Rajkumar Kanaga Chellam, and school psychologist, Jeff Larson. We are excited to have them join our team!

There have also been some teacher grade level changes at Jackson. Our kinder team was joined by Ceci Temores and Dana Saindon from first grade, while first grade welcomed Regina Juan from second grade. Bonnie Sanders has moved from kindergarten and joined Shannon Smith as a job share partner teaching second grade. Finally, Sokhary Gozun is our new TK para-professional joining TK teacher, Heather Dion.

Please take the time to read our Jackson Ave Parent/Student Handbook by clicking the link below (will open in a new window), as it contains lots of good information about our school.

Important Dates and Information

Our office is now open daily from 8:00-4:00. We look forward to seeing/speaking with you, if you need anything.

InfoSnap codes have arrived via email. This is an extremely important process we need all families to complete, as it provides our staff with updated contact information. Please do not put this off. If you need help, including access to a computer, you are invited to drop by our office for support.

Families not completing the InfoSnap process will be contacted by office staff and eventually by me in effort to be sure Jackson Avenue is 100% SNAPPED. We had a perfect completion rate last year; let's do it again!

Teacher assignments and any additional information related to school will be emailed this Friday, August 19 at 4:00. TK/K teacher welcome letters will be emailed August 19. Teacher welcome letters will be emailed August 22 at 4:00.

Our first day of school is August 23 from 8:30-1:30 for all grades. August 24 is 8:30-1:30 for all grades (all Wednesdays are 1:30 dismissal). August 25 is 8:30-1:30 for all grades, as well. August 26 is 1:30 dismissal for TK/K and our regular dismissal of 2:50 for 1-5.

In a continued effort to maximize student learning, we will open gates at 8:25 each morning, allowing students to walk directly to their classroom where they will be greeted by their teacher and begin their instructional day. Our preference is for students to walk independently to the classroom with adults remaining outside our gates, however we understand there are occasions which may require adults to walk with their student to their classroom (ie. carrying a project). Our gates will be closed and campus secured daily at 8:35 as part of our overall safety protocols. Students arriving after 8:35 are considered tardy and must enter through our front office for check in. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.

At the end of the day, gates will be opened at dismissal by teachers as they walk their class to their designated gate (teachers will share their gate location in their welcome letters August 22). Students needing to pick up siblings or leave through a different gate are allowed to do so; please be sure to coordinate with your child's teacher if this is the case.

Back to School Night

Mark your calendars for Jackson Ave's Back to School Night September 1 from 5:30-6:30. Watch for further details.

School Site Council

Congratulations to parent rep, Katy Howser, who was seated on our SSC at Open House election. We still have an available seat for a second parent rep. Please read below for more information.

It is the time of year when Jackson Ave solicits parent candidates for School Site Council (SSC) to serve a 2 year term beginning next year (2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years). Elections will be held by ballot at our Back to School Night, Sept 2.

Serving the second year of their 2 year term are Gabrielle Carpenter, Jason Cruz, and Nicole Tovar.

We meet 4 times per year as a team of 5 parents and 5 staff (Principal included).

Our meetings will be held in person from 4:30-5:30.

This important school function serves several purposes achieved through School Site Council Meetings, including:
• To review the Single Plan for Student Achievement
• To carry out other legislative requirements of an SSC
• To discuss issues and programs
• To give input and/or make decisions
• To develop leadership
• To share information and educate the group
• To improve overall organizational productivity and effectiveness
• To become more informed about categorical programs and budget

If interested, please submit your name, contact information, and a very brief summary of why you would be a good candidate by August 26, 2022 at 4:00 pm in order to be included on the ballot for Back to School Night voting.

Together We Are Stronger!
