April, May, June in the Library: Spring into a Great Book!
April - Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is International Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Our students asked me if we could create a display to honor this important month. One of our students created posters and infographics, as well as provided a book list of recommended books. I commend our students for their interest in this important subject. Come on in to see our display.
Book Spotlight:
Speak - by Laurie Halse Anderson. This is the story of Melinda, a ninth grade student who enters high school traumatized, after having been assaulted at a party in the summer. No one knows about the attack. They only know she called the police at a party. As such, she is ostracized. This is especially difficult because her attacker goes to her school. The story follows the painful yet poignant path of Melinda as she recovers enough to find her voice.
(YA; sexual abuse)
Autism Awareness Month
May is Autism Awareness Month. We are so lucky to have Best Buddies at Del Norte! Best Buddies is coming to the library to help us build a library display centered on their mission: to create opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
National Pet Month
Help Needed: Humans Need Animal Love!
Come match our staff's pets to their humans in our fun, interactive library display.
Sample: Can you guess which DNHS humans belong to these pets?
Happy Pride Month!
While we close the upstairs library in June for book check-in, we do try to feature strong LGBTQIA options for students to check out throughout the year.
Book Spotlight:
One of my favorite books in our collection is Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. This historical fiction is written in a beautifully lyrical style. It tells the story of Achilles and Patroclus. Achilles is the famed warrior of the Trojan War. Patroclus is a Prince who is scorned by his father for his 'weakness': his kindness. In this fascinating account of the war story we all know as the Iliad, we get a unique, character driven tale of two men who complement one another in a relationship that grows to something truly epic.
Happy Graduation!
It is always a bittersweet event for us to say good-bye to our students in June. Many of our senior students have worked as Teaching Assistants or have graced the library with their presence throughout their years here. We are so proud of all of their accomplishments!
Seniors: You MUST return all items on your account to walk at graduation! Scour those closets! Collect all library items! Be sure to bring books and Chromebooks in before your early graduation deadline. *Find those Chromebook cords! The I.T. Department charges $30 per lost cord. This is the item that tied up most seniors last year - pardon the pun!
Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
I loved curling up with a cup of tea to read this book. It takes place in World War I England. The best part of its old world charm: it features strong magical realism undertones. When Iris Winnow's brother leaves for the warfront and her mother falls apart, Iris is forced to seek a job as a journalist. This proves fortuitous because writing is her medium of choice. She pours her soul into her typewriter - sometimes even writing to her brother, although he will never receive her letters. Mysteriously, her letters disappear from her wardrobe - and replies do appear in response. Who is sending these replies? None other than her arch rival at the newspaper, who unbeknownst to her, has been receiving her letters through a magical portal between them. His anonymous responses are at first terse, but as the world falls apart between them, their emotional bond becomes that which provides them sustenance. And then they are sent to the front lines...
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno Garcia
I did not mean to pick up two of the same genre books, but I am so glad I did, because they were so different yet so good. This one features a protagonist from 1950's Mexico City. She is young, fierce, independent, and affluent. Her father sends her to check on her cousin, who has married and moved to the country, where she has sent a troubling letter indicating that she is living in a haunted house. When Noemi goes to investigate, she finds a colonial era home whose masters are steeped in the traditions of bygone days. And yes, the house seems to swirl with secrets. Add to this the lack of electricity and the remoteness of the mansion, and we have a gothic story reminiscent of Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher, but with resonances of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Isabel Allende's traditions of magical realism in Hispanic literature.

Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell
This is a review of a book that made me feel slightly nauseous. Yup, I did not like it, folks. But I know it's a great book. Here's why. First, the reason I detested it was that it conjured up all my worst fears. As a mother of teenaged girls, I wanted to cover my eyes while reading about a kidnapped girl. Second, my students recommended this book to me, and it's a New York Times Bestseller. Third, as much as I felt ill, I compulsively continued reading. Ugh. And the end was not easier to take, let me tell you. If you have the stomach for a sinister mystery, this book is for you. But don't say I didn't warn you: this is the stuff my nightmares are made of!
