May is Mental Health Awareness Month

At Lockport High School, a bulletin board was created for Mental Health Awareness Month to raise awareness and educate students about mental illnesses, the realities of living with these conditions, and strategies for attaining mental health and wellness.

Anna Merritt Elementary School students learn calming strategies to deal with strong feelings by using mindfulness practices in a restorative circle. Restorative circles are strategies used to develop relationships, build communities, and respond to conflicts and problems that arise to create a safe and welcoming learning environment for the classroom. With restorative circles, everyone has an opportunity to speak and be listened to. In the photograph, the string represents a direct connection to the circle keeper (teacher) and the other students in the classroom. Normally, students would be sitting in a circle with the keeper at the top of the circle. String was used to maintain that connection while ensuring social distancing during the pandemic.
