Sickle cell disease is a bunch of disorders that affects hemoglobin, the molecule in red blood cells that transmit oxygen to cells throughout the body. People with this disorder have a normal hemoglobin molecules called hemoglobin S, which can deform red blood cells into a sickle, or banana, shape.

When sickle-shaped cells block small blood vessels, less blood can each that part of the body. Tissue that does not receive a normal blood flow at one point becomes damaged. This is what causes the complications of sickle cell disease. There is currently no total cure for sickle cell disease.
