Principal Message

Hello Pershing Families,

Welcome back and Happy New Year to all of you! I hope this message finds your family healthy and excited about all the possibilities a new year may bring!

First, I want to thank all of the families who supported the 6th Grade Holiday Food Drive Drive-Thru that occurred before the break. We collected and donated 1,670 pounds of food! The food donated goes directly back to the Orangevale Community through the Food Closet at the Seventh Day Adventist Church across the street from Pershing. Thank you for your generosity!

As the weather continues to change and get colder, please remember to make extra time to get here for arrival, bring extra patience with you, and to please stay off of cell phones as you arrive and depart Pershing. Please also remember to LABEL your child's jackets, lunch boxes and water bottles. As kids play, they tend to take off their jackets and discard them wherever they are playing. We donated 3 gigantic bags of jackets and shirts because we do not have the capacity to maintain that large of a lost and found. We were only able to return 3 items to students because names were on the labels. Please remind your children to place their items on the class line, to write names on their belongings, and to search lost and found if they misplaced something.

On January 24th, Progress Reports for students will be viewable on the Parent Portal. Students in 3rd through 6th grades will also take the iReady test online in class, helping teachers and staff to monitor student learning and progress. Please encourage your child to do his or her best by taking time on the test. In Kindergarten through 2nd grade, students complete other measures, such as reading assessments for their teachers, to monitor progress towards benchmarks. If you have questions about your child's progress or would like to learn more about how to provide support for your child's learning growth, please reach out to your child's teacher.

Lastly, an annual survey will be shared next week with families, staff and intermediate students (4th - 6th grades) to gather feedback and input about Pershing. Please look for information about this survey. It will be sent to you online, but paper formats are also available, as well. Your input and feedback help us to reflect on current practices and plan adjustments for the future through a process of continuous improvement.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership!

Mrs. Kendra Shelton
