Post from the Principal...
Dear Patriot Families,
Thank you for all of your participation and engagement during our first week of school. We appreciate everyone’s efforts to be solution focused and patient. By the end of the week of this first week of instruction, many of our initial challenges have a resolution.
We have had several questions regarding student attendance. Please know that this week, we have been very flexible and understanding in marking attendance as we have worked through technological hurdles and as we have all become acquainted with remote learning. Please do not worry about absences and tardies last week. We know there were struggles with connectivity and so we counted any effort at connecting or engagement as present.
The State of Tennessee has stated that the school day for middle school students is six and half hours for remote learning. For students to be counted present at Liberty Bell for a school day, students must log into their home base, log in and participate in each of his/her classes AND complete class work. Please remind students that our remote learning experience this year is very different than what we all experienced last spring. Last spring, the state suspended grades and accountability during our closure. This year, that is not the case. Attendance and grades do count. The attendance, engagement and work completion will count and matters in terms learning, growth and in the passing of courses. Students must be logging in to every class and must participate in each class in order to learn and receive credit. Please make sure that your child understands that only attending certain classes or choosing which classes to engage is not the expectation. Not logging into classes and not completing work will result in absences and will result in poor grades. We want to support all students to success and this can only happen when students are present and engaged in all classes.
If your child is sick or has a planned absence, please notify the teacher or school, just as you would if your child was in school as normal so that we can know and appropriately code the absence.
Please know that we are here to support your child and your family as we navigate this remote learning experience together. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or our school if you need assistance or if you have questions.

Johnson City Schools releases Parent Introduction to Remote Learning
Johnson City Schools is pleased to release a self-paced course for parents called “Parent Introduction to Remote Learning”. This course is required for all parents who registered for full remote learning for either nine or 18 weeks. This course is also highly recommended for all parents as Johnson City Schools is beginning the school year with all students learning in a remote environment.
“We hope that the Parent Introduction to Remote Learning will be a helpful tool for our families as we begin the school year with Remote Learning,” Johnson City Schools Superintendent Steve Barnett said. “Our district administration and staff have worked tirelessly to provide our families with support, and we believe these resources will answer many questions about the different digital platforms our students will use.”
The course includes an overview of the JCS Remote Learning Handbook for Parents and Students as well as detailed information about the learning platforms used by the district to facilitate remote learning. During the course, parents of Canvas users will be provided the steps to sign up as a “Parent Observer” so that parents can actively track assignments, due dates, and communications to and from teachers. Additionally, several helpful videos will assist parents with technology support at home, understanding how to navigate the remote learning environment, and see how the various platforms work in real-time. Information about internet safety and appropriate online class behavior will be covered in a digital citizenship section.
“While JCS remote learning teachers will be providing their own customized orientations, we believe this course will serve as a valuable reference tool for parents,” Johnson City Schools Supervisor of Secondary and Instructional Technology David Timbs said. “The course can be accessed multiple times for access to help documents and videos.”
At the conclusion of the first time through the course, parents will be prompted to complete a short form signifying completion of the class and review of the information. This documentation will help the school know that parents understand the expectations and supports available in the remote learning environment.
The first line of assistance will, of course, be the classroom teacher but this course provides 24/7 support for parents.

The Tennessee Department of Education and Trevecca University announced a new resource, Bridging the Distance: Family Remote Learning, which is specially designed to help families navigate remote learning and better understand the common tools and programs used by educators.
This completely free resource features “Remote Learning 101” modules that will help families learn the same tools our educators use for remote instruction. These short, accessible videos from experts will help families understand common remote learning tools and equips them to speak the same “tech” language as the teacher, so they will be better able to support their child’s learning.
Families can access these resources at: https://remotefamilylearning.com/.A LBMS tutorial that parents can use to be observers in their child's CANVAS class.

Johnson City Schools meal distribution for August 10-28
Johnson City Schools will provide daily curbside meal pick-up and meal delivery for students from August 10 until August 28. At this time, we will only be offering meal distribution to Johnson City Schools’ Pre-K through 12th grade students.
Curbside Pick-up: How it works
● Meals will be provided from 9:30- 10:15 a.m. Monday through Friday at all Johnson City School locations.
● Eligible students will receive up to one breakfast and one lunch per day at the time of pick-up based on parent request.
● Each individual school will establish how traffic will flow and the precise pick up location for meals. It will be similar to the summer feeding pick up. Please contact the school cafeteria to find out how to pick-up meals at that school.
● You may choose any school to pick up meals; it doesn’t have to be the school your child attends. Parents/guardians with students at multiple schools should pick up all meals at one school site.
● Parents/guardians are allowed to pick up meals and bring them home to their children. Parents will be asked to complete a sheet listing student name, school, and meal(s) requested (breakfast and/or lunch) each day. This will be compared to student enrollment.
Meal Delivery: How it works
● Meals will be delivered daily between 10 am to Noon depending on location and the bus delivery route. The bus routes will be the same as the summer feeding routes. Eligible students will receive one breakfast and one lunch per day at the time of delivery.
If a need exists where no route is planned, please contact Ann Hilliard, Johnson City School Food Service, at 423-434-5228. The request will be reviewed and considered, but, not guaranteed.
Meal Costs and Payments differ from summer feeding based on Federal rules.
● Meals will be charged to the student’s account according to the student’s eligibility status.
● There must be sufficient funds in a student’s meal account to cover the cost of meals if payment is needed based on reduced price or paid meal status. (This is everyone not currently approved for free meals. Free status from 2019-2020 is still in effect).
● If you don’t already have an payment account set up, you may do so at www.myschoolbucks.com
