Ms. Wertheim's World Changers
News and Resources from Room 203
Exciting News!
I am so excited to announce that our class reading video was seen by Wilson Fundations (huge thank you to Mrs. Dechant for sending it to them!) and they posted it on the front page of the Wilson Language website. As Mrs. Dechant said, "My kids are growing, and I attribute it to Fundations. I cannot say enough about what this curriculum has done for all my students!" I agree. Way to go, 2nd graders! You're 'Fundations Famous' :)
What are we up to this week?
- FUNdations: We are beginning Unit 10, which introduces a new syllable: The Double Vowel syllable, known as the D-Syllable. This week students will be focusing on two vowels teams: ai and ay. The key words are ai-bait and ay-play. Trick words for this unit include: great, country, away, America, school, thought.
- Reading: We are studying stories from diverse cultures, focusing on fables and folk tales. In addition to reading a variety of fables, students are practicing using details from the fable to describe the lesson, moral, or central message. If your child is interested in reading fables at home there are several on myON. Their username is their usual username and their password is claxton. Please let me know if you have any trouble logging into myON.
- Writing: Students are researching historic African Americans and creating "All About" books, focusing on non-fiction text features including table of contents, heading, captions, glossary, and index.
- Math: We are focusing on telling time to the nearest 5-minute increment. Students are also practicing using the terms "quarter past, quarter 'til, half past" to describe time when reading digital and analog clocks. Here is a great "time travel" math game on abcya.com. This website also has some great math games for practicing time.
- Social Studies: We are beginning an amazing TAPAS residency with Mrs. Allbach, the Media Center Coordinator and collage artist, Ginger Huebner. Students will learn about the work of Romare Bearden and his depictions of race and identity. Create original art that expresses the themes of community and racial identity with emphasis on students’ individual voices, experiences, and cultures. The individual pieces will be assembled into a collage which will be a permanent display in the Media Center. We will also be doing a Skype lesson this week to discuss culture with Homa Tavangar, the author of Growing Up Global. We will also be able to watch a wonderful Chinese New Year parade this Wednesday. Thank you, Mr. Butler, for organizing that event!
- Science: We are continuing with Sound School, developed by the Dr. Bob Moog Foundation right here in Asheville! Don't forget to mark your calendar: students will have a chance to share what they've learned about sound through a performance at the Orange Peel on April 14th! If you play an instrument and are interested in visiting our class to perform or talk about music, please email me!
