Spooner High Update
September 2, 2016
Our School Year is Off to a Great Start!
I wanted to thank you for such an awesome start to the year at SHS! The students have adapted very well to our schedule adjustments, engaged very well at our assembly and information sessions, and I cannot say enough about the many examples of student leadership as we all adjust to a new year. We have much to look forward to this year!
If you have questions comments, or concerns, please call, email, or set up an appointment to speak with me. It is important that we are able to address any matters to remove barriers for your student to have the best learning experience possible!
Best Regards,
Sarah Johnson
Schedule Improvements
Free Universal Breakfast Offered 7:30 a.m.-7:55 a.m.
The schedule has been adjusted to remove serving of mid-morning breakfast. (Grab n Go) All students are offered a free breakfast each morning, so please plan accordingly and encourage your Spooner student to eat breakfast at school prior to the 8:00 a.m. bell for 1st period. Teachers are wiling to accommodate students who come in late to finish eating in the classroom.
Lunch Schedule:One serving time 12:30-1:05 p.m.
Lunch will be served one time within the schedule. The decision to make this adjustment included the desire to avoid classes that are broken up by a lunch period, which can lead to distractions upon return, a lack of ability for clubs to meet during lunch, and a more streamlined day for our service staff.
Students will be given an extra five minutes to accommodate for a larger group to serve. Because Rails Time will be highly focused upon learning needs of students, clubs can meet during this time and advisors will be working on coordinating those schedules.
After two days, we have learned some adjustments that can be made, and we are excited about what we are seeing. One positive is the engagement that the student body is having with one another. The students have been awesome! We are not seeing messes, they are getting their food in plenty of time, and the social interactions have been very positive during this period. We understand that there are some modifications we can make that will decrease some issues with seating that students are experiencing, and we will roll those out in coming weeks. Please know that there is space for every student, but socially, the seat number does not always match the student's desired social arrangements. We have been seeking student input and look forward to making some changes that will alleviate any issues.
Rails Time: (Formerly Known As Advisory Period)
Our high school staff is excited to pilot a new way of offering flexible options for students in order to meet what each student needs to maximize their learning at Spooner High!
Students will still experience an advisory day, which will establish a strong relationship with one adult in the building. We know this is important for the success of our students. Students and advisors will meet every Monday to review progress in courses and create a schedule for the remainder of the week for each student. This may include a quiet study hall environment, targeted skill supports, homework help from peers/teachers, and even enrichment time for students!
Staff reviewed the process with students within the first few days, and we are excited to see what next week brings with this 36 minute segment of their day. We will be eliciting feedback throughout the year in order to refine our process and are excited about what this time can offer and grow into for our learning community at the high school.
