Beaverton School District Bond Passed
Thank you Beaverton voters!
May 18, 2022
Dear BSD Families and Staff,
We want to thank those of you who voted in the May 17 election. We’re happy to report that the 2022 Beaverton School District Bond passed. We’re immensely grateful for our community’s support and trust. We do not take either for granted.
As the District begins the work outlined in the bond, your School Board and citizen-led Bond Accountability Committee will be providing strong oversight to ensure your tax dollars are well spent and projects are finished within budget and in a timely manner. An equity lens will continue to be applied to this work to ensure support for historically underserved students.
We are excited to begin addressing seismic inadequacies, mounting deferred maintenance, overstressed HVAC systems, failing roofs, aging technology and more. You can find current information about bond projects on our website.
Again, thank you for investing in safe and healthy schools where our students and staff can learn, work and thrive.

Congratulations, Rishab Jain!
Congratulations to Westview High School senior Rishab Jain, who received the Regeneron Young Scientist Award of $50,000 for developing an AI-based model to enable rapid and cost-effective production of drugs, such as mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, using recombinant DNA technology. His model is trained to optimize the selection of genetic codes used to instruct the mRNA. Rishab also won the Biomedical Engineering First Place Award ($5,000).
Additionally, sophomore Alexander Plekhanov from BASE won the Physics and Astronomy First Place Award ($5,000), and sophomore Nikhil Nayak from Sunset High School won the Robotics and Intelligent Machines Third Place Award ($1,000)!
These awards were presented at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, which draws student scientists from around the world. Well done!
Erin's Law this week for 11th/12th
We will be providing Erin's Law Lessons for all our 11th and 12th graders during AT May 23rd, and May 25th.
Meet Erin & hear her story
What is Erin's Law?
In 2015, the Oregon legislature passed SB 856, also known as Erin’s Law. Erin’s Law requires the development and adoption of child sexual abuse prevention programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade in all Oregon public schools.
SB 856 mandates that all Oregon Public Schools provide:
A minimum of 4 instructional sessions (equal to or greater than a standard class period) of sex abuse prevention instruction per year for grades kindergarten through 12.
Sexual abuse instruction that is integrated and part of required district comprehensive sexuality education plan and is aligned with state standards.
Instruction that is age appropriate, medically accurate, and is not shame or fear based.
Instruction that is culturally inclusive and is responsive to diverse students including race, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation.
A parental involvement component to inform parents about child sexual abuse topics.
A professional training component for administrators, teachers, and other school personnel.
In all areas, parents and guardians are a child’s first and most influential teachers. Parents, guardians, and schools share a common goal: we want students of all ages to be valued, respected, and safe in all aspects of their lives. Additional information on Erin’s Law can be found on the district website listed below:

If you have further questions regarding all or part of the Erin’s Law lessons, please contact Hope Pearson at hope_pearson@beaverton.k12.or.us
Erin's Law for 12th Graders without AT
We will be offering the Erin's Law lessons to seniors who do not have an AT. These students are invited to join counselors in the library at 1:00pm if they plan to participate.
Final Opportunity Week Schedule
Our Final Opportunity Week is June 14-17. June 16 and 17 are early release days.
We have worked with the District around the the final opportunity week schedule. The last day of school is Tuesday, June 21. This is an early release day after all final opportunity periods occurred the week before. This is a school day where will provide a chance for students to access all of their teachers and work on any last targets or learning opportunities. The current plan is to have student go through an early release A Day schedule. We will work to organize a way students can work with their B Day teachers on this day if needed. More on June 21 soon.

Grad Night Cancelled
We are sorry to announce the all night Grad Night event the evening after graduation is cancelled. The Grad Nigh Parent Committee was unable to sell enough tickets to meet their minimum for Grad Night, so they have made the difficult decision to cancel the event. They know this will be extremely disappointing for our students and they did not make the decision lightly. They are hearing that the COVID surge, the unknown of the event space (we have not had the benefit of the buzz/momentum created from previous graduating classes after their Grad night) and financial burdens are all playing a part in students not being able to attend the event.
If you purchased a ticket, please go to this link for refund information: https://forms.gle/p6H7atgickZWJETL7

Beaverton School District Antiracist Vision Statement
The BSD School Board unanimously voted to adopt an Antiracist Vision Statement. Informed by the work of the Beaverton Multicultural Educator Community (BMEC) and the 40-member Equitable Policies Task Force made up of students, family, community members and staff, the vision statement will guide our implementation of our Every Student Belongs Policy (ACB) and help ensure that our schools are safe and welcoming learning spaces for all.
Antiracist Vision Statement
Every student and employee has the right to learn and work in a safe and inclusive school environment that honors their race, color, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability and national origin.
Beaverton School District owns that our student outcomes currently point to our part in perpetuating institutional racism, and we commit to actions that address the current culture that is leading to these outcomes. Schools are critical in providing safe and creative opportunities for people to learn about different cultural and racial identities, have conversations about pressing issues and correct injustice wherever it exists. We commit to eliminating the structures, policies and practices that perpetuate inequities in our schools and in our community.
Beaverton School District will authentically engage each student, family and staff member to build connection, uplift understanding and truly value the diversity of our school communities. We will work to dismantle policies and systems that perpetuate institutional racism and barriers to education and other school-related activities. Students and families of color will see themselves represented in curriculum, materials, instruction, classrooms and all school activities in our district. Our district will honor, respect, represent, engage with and be accessible to students and adults from all communities.
Eliminating racism and all forms of bias is fundamental to our work — not just a part of our work. We commit to removing racism, white supremacy, hate speech and all forms of bigotry from our schools and communities.
Our district will:
- Seek and incorporate student, family, educator and administrator input in decision-making processes.
- Provide ongoing anti-bias and antiracist education to every staff member.
- Enforce Every Student Belongs procedures to prevent, interrupt and stop racist and biased incidents among students and between staff and students or community members.
- Create an inclusive learning community that honors, respects, represents, engages and is accessible to learners from all communities.
- Create permanent district funding and resources to promote equitable policies, structures and practices for BIPOC students and other marginalized groups.
- Implement policies, procedures and professional development to confront and eliminate conscious and unconscious racism and review these policies and procedures regularly to ensure we are meeting our commitments.
