From the Principal's Desk
This school year brings anticipation along with change. 2019-20 will be the inaugural year of our elementary school consisting of grades 3-5. With K-2 teachers exiting their rooms to move to the new Primary building, there has been a change in the location of 3rd-5th classroom space. Areas being renovated this summer include C hall (formerly 3rd grade), the cafeteria, 2 classrooms and restrooms in D hall (formerly 4th grade), and the long courtyard hallway. 3rd grade will move into their new classrooms in E hall (formerly Kindergarten). Music, art, gifted, and Title I will set up in rooms in C hall. Adventure Club will finally have their own dedicated space for the first time in two decades in C hallway. Finally, our 5th grade teachers will round out our PES family by moving into rooms in D and E hallway.
I am honored to step into the principal shoes as Ms. Koenig moves to the primary building, and joining me is Leslie Ackermann as our assistant principal. We will continue to work with PES staff to forge strong relationships among staff and students this year with our theme of Family Makes Our House a Home.
A strong school family sets the foundation for a healthy social and emotional environment. We believe that students will learn and grow best in such an environment.
A new implementation is that of a "house" system, part of our emphasis on school family. Everyone in our building will be part of one of six houses - working, growing and playing together, just like family. Students will be assigned houses at the beginning of the year.
I hope that you enjoy the remainder of summer, and I look forward to seeing everyone at our Open House on August 12.

2019 MAP Test Results
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):
The Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) Grade-Level Assessments evaluate students’ progress toward the Missouri Learning Standards. Grade-Level Assessments provide important information that contributes to decisions concerning individual students, groups of students, and educational programs. Assessments are given in the subject areas of Communication Arts (grades 3-8), Mathematics (grades 3-8) and Science (grades 5 and 8).
A policy statement, adopted by the Missouri State Board of Education, designated the purposes of the Missouri Assessment Program as:
• Improving students’ acquisition of important knowledge, skills and competencies;
• Monitoring the performance of Missouri’s education system;
• Empowering students and their families to improve their educational prospects; and
• Supporting the teaching and learning process.
The effectiveness of an assessment program depends on the wise choice of assessment methods, appropriate administration procedures and accurate interpretation of results.
The Grade-Level Assessments include multiple types of questions or items:
• Selected Response (also known as multiple choice) items are composed of a question followed by a series of possible responses. Students must select the correct response or responses.
• Constructed Response or Short Text items require students to supply an appropriate response rather than making a selection from a list of choices.
• Performance Tasks/Events allow students to work through more complicated items using real-world scenarios.
• Technology Enhanced items make use of technology in the presentation of the item, the ways in which students respond, or both. For example, students might listen to a story and then drag and drop labels into a diagram, or click on specific parts of a text to provide a response.
Your child’s Individual Student Report (ISR) includes an Achievement Level which will describe his or her performance as Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, or Advanced. The report will also include a short description of the knowledge and skills that are typically demonstrated by students in each Achievement Level. These reports will be given to you at the Perryville Elementary Open House on August 12 at 4:30-7:30.
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) publishes a Guide to Interpreting Results (GIR) that provides additional details about the content of the Individual Student Reports.
The GIR is available on the DESE website at: http://dese.mo.gov/college-career- readiness/assessment/grade-levelOpen House
Also available in the cafeteria will be Food Services, Transportation, and Adventure Club. We will be selling school shirts for $10 (our theme is Family Makes our House a Home). Several scouting groups will have a table set up as well.
Of course, the most important thing is to meet your teacher, see your classroom, hear about the plans for this school year, and drop off any supplies.
We look forward to seeing all of our students and families!
Student Drop-off
Staff supervision begins at 7:25. Students should not arrive earlier than that time.
Arriving By Bus
At 7:25 A.M. the buses will unload at the bus unloading circle on the west side of the elementary building. Duty personnel will be available to supervise the students as they exit the buses in the mornings. Students will enter the building by using the sidewalk to enter by way of the courtyard hallway (formerly Kindergarten hallway) entrance to the right of the front entrance area. Students will either go to the cafeteria for breakfast or to the multipurpose room. The duty personnel will signal them to go to their classrooms when it’s time.
Arriving By Vehicle
At 7:25 A.M., Morning traffic enters in four lanes at the drop-off/pick-up entrance off of Schindler Road. Vehicles will be dismissed 3-5 vehicles at a time to unload from each of the four lanes in order. Students will exit the vehicle and enter the building at the west side of the elementary front lot through the long hallway entrance to the right of the front entrance area.
Students must arrive by 7:45 A.M. to eat breakfast. Students arriving after 7:45 A.M. will receive a brown bag breakfast to take to their classroom. Classes will begin promptly at 7:55 A.M. Tardies will be assessed for students who arrive after 7:55 A.M. See tardy policy for further information.
Student Dismissal
School is dismissed daily at 2:55 p.m. From the classroom teacher, you will receive an information sheet to fill out which provides directions for the end-of-day plans for your child: ride a bus, walk, go to parent pick-up, or go to Adventure Club each day (Adventure Club is our after-school program designed for childcare between the hours of 2:55 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.). Each student will follow those directions each day unless we are notified by parents that there is a change. Students will not be allowed on a different bus or be allowed to go home by another way without parental notification.
Parent Pick-Up - Those who are picking up a child by vehicle in the afternoon should fill each pick-up lane starting with the outside lane (closest to Schindler Road). A school car visor must be displayed or parents will be directed to park and go to the office to pick up the child(ren). The school car visors will be given out at Open House.
IDs Required for Visitors
In order to promote a safe and secure environment, visitors are required to show a valid, government-issued ID before receiving access to the building. This includes the following:
driver's license
state-issued ID
passport
consular card
Students can be signed out by a parent/guardian or approved emergency contact.
A copy of a custody agreement is required to be placed in the student’s permanent file if a parent/other individual is NOT allowed to pick up the child at school.
If you have questions about signing students out, feel free to contact Ms. Narrow or Ms. Ackermann.
