School News
Last Friday, members of our staff, a YES parent representative and an Auburn community partner, came together to update our Yarbrough Elementary Strategic Plan. This plan included updated Mission, Objectives and Tactics. We will now use our Strategic Plan to write four Action Plans. These Action Plans will provide specific ways for our school to improve our relationship with our parents, ways we can make learning fun and meaningful to our students as well as new ways we can make connections between our staff and our students. We look forward to sharing our progress in this very important project.
Thank you for sharing your children with us each day. We promise to always do our best to make YES a place where they feel safe and supported.

TechKnow Robotics with Mrs. Roberts
I am so proud of our three TechKnow Robotics Teams! These students competed in our first competition Saturday, October 27th. We received our robots 2 ½ weeks ago and worked every day during lunch, as well as every Tuesday and Thursday after school to get our robots built. The students only had one day to practice and troubleshoot! Saturday, we met students from all over the state and learned so much as we talked with them about robots and programming. I am very proud of these students and their hard work!! We are now brainstorming, reconfiguring our designs, and adding to our competition categories so that we are more competitive for when we compete again this school year.

Managing Asthma in the School Setting
Studies show that children with asthma perform better in school when their asthma is well managed. Asthma symptoms can disrupt learning and limit participation in class activities.
Asthma can’t be cured, but it can be controlled with proper management. Taking medications as prescribed and avoiding asthma triggers are the best way to prevent asthma symptoms.
Keep routine follow up visits and always contact the doctor if your child’s symptoms get worse, especially during illness.

Art Action with Mr. Daniel
We have an exciting time planned for the month of November in the YES Art Dept. Our talented citizens of YES are getting ready to start our Veteran's Day Project. Our fourth grade artists will use their creative ability, Elements of Art and Principles of Design to develop "Patriotic Airplane Renderings." We will also explore the works of Andy Warhol.
Our fifth grade artists will utilize their imagination, Elements of Art, Principles of Design, and rendering skills, to produce "True-Blue Cupcake Renderings." We will also explore the works of Winslow Homer.

Music Message from Mrs. Oprandy
In preparation for the YES Veterans Day program on November 9th, all students have been learning and singing patriotic songs to include “Star Spangled Banner," “America," and “Armed Forces Medley." All fourth and fifth grade students learned to identify the appropriate technique for playing our music classroom’s barred instruments: xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels.
Fifth graders were introduced to half notes and half rests. Using these notations, as well as those they’ve already learned, students composed their own two-measure rhythms. They then took those rhythms and composed their own melody to play on a barred instrument.
Fourth graders took what they knew of short and long rhythm syllables and applied it to their new learning of the duration of quarter and eighth notes. They learned how to clap and say the rhythm syllables for these notations, then practiced reading rhythms while playing unpitched rhythm instruments.
Venture Visit with Mrs. Roberts
Our little design engineers have been so busy! Designing and building is essential to engineering. Engineers follow the steps of the design process to help them create the best possible solutions to real-world problems. These challenges may be simple or complex, and the wide variety of solutions can also cover a range of effort for the user. I appreciate all of the students that brought items in to participate in the class activities. They have built some very cool designs. The students are troubleshooting the different designs to find the best one for their task.
The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
During the month of October, Guidance lessons focused on safety and healthy choices. We had fun dressing up for Red Ribbon Week, promoting an environment free of drugs and violence. Please take time to discuss with your children the possible negative pressures they may face as they grow up. Role play and help equip them with refusal skills to insure their safety. We had great discussions during guidance lessons.
In November we fill focus on bullying prevention. Students will learn the difference between tattling and bullying. They will learn and practice various strategies in how to handle bullying situations. Please talk with your children about the importance of using their courage to stand up against bullying by reporting it to a trusted adult. Remember you can’t help your children if you are not informed.
Signs of Bullying:
Children may act differently or become more anxious. Their eating and sleeping may change for the worse. Children may not participate in things they enjoy doing. Children may become more easily upset or moodier, and even try to avoid situations due to the bully being present.
Discuss your concerns with your children; if they are hesitant to open up, you can always bring your concerns to their teacher or counselor.
Quote of the month:
“Bullying is a horrible thing. It sticks with you forever. It poisons you. But only if you let it.”
Heather Brewer
