STORM information you must know
- Many scholarships are uploaded to the GCS Scholarship Website, www.gastoncountyscholarships.com When using these applications, make sure to use the "typewriter" function or "text in comment" feature to complete the applications
- TURN IN ALL SCHOLARSHIPS YOU RECEIVE TO MRS. CLARK…EVEN IF YOU DO NOT ACCEPT THEM.
- Consult college/university websites for scholarship information…not all scholarships will come to the STORM Counseling Office.
- If you have the option to type your applications, do so. If not, use only black ink.
- Be aware of all deadlines…are they “postmarked” deadlines or “received by” deadlines??
Scholarships
Pat E. Haney Scholarship - Award is $1,000, the Belmont Historical Society offers this scholarship annually to a graduating senior from the Belmont area. Visit www.gastoncountyscholarships.com for an application. Submission deadline is May 1, 2016.
Mount Holly Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship - Award is two $500 scholarships...one female and one male. The scholarship considers academic achievement (minimum GPA 3.0), extracurricular activities, community involvement, and financial need. See Mrs. Clark for an application. Completed applications must be turned into Mrs. Clark by April 22, 2016.
Miriam S. & William T. Hall, Jr. Foundation Scholarship - The Miriam S. & William T. Hall Jr. Foundation Scholarship will be awarded to a senior student in Gaston County Public Schools who plans to pursue a degree in education. The scholarship is for $2000 per year, renewable each year for a total of $8000 over a four-year period. SCHS can send forward ONE nominee from our applicants. For an application, visit www.gastoncountyscholarships.com Completed applications must be submitted to Mrs. Clark by April 27, 2016.
NCACTE Guidance & Career Development Scholars - Award is $1,000 to a high school senior who has completed a CTE pathway/concentration. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 Visit http://ncacte.wufoo.com/forms/m1q4cajf1kchsyx/ for an application and more details. Deadline is April 15, 2016.
Grimm-Koch-Lochart Scholarship - Award is a $500 scholarship. The Grimm-Koch-Lockhart Literary Scholarship Fund is named for the Founders of ConCarolinas. Applications are available to students attending a North or South Carolina college or university and studying English in some form (whether it be it a literary major, writing, or other). SCHS Academic Booster Club Scholarship - SCHS Academic Booster Club will award one female senior and one male senior a scholarship. Visit www.gastoncountyscholarships.com for an application. Submit applications to Mrs. Clark by May 6, 2016.
Rotary "4-Way Test Challenge" Essay/Speech Contest - Create an original short essay based upon the Rotary "4-way test", which is outlined in the application. SCHS can send forward 5 essays to the Gaston Breakfast Rotary Club. Visit www.gastoncountyscholarships.com for an application. Submit your essay to Mrs. Clark by March 21, 2016.
Michael A DeMayo Scholarship - Award is $2,500 to fifteen recipients. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and must be accepted to a four-year college/university. Completed applications must be POSTMARKED by March 18, 2016 or dropped off at one of their offices by 5:00 pm by March 18. Visit www.gastoncountyscholarships.com for an application.
Gaston College Scholarships - Gaston College Foundation offers numerous scholarships to deserving students each year. Visit http://www.gaston.edu/blog/2016/02/16/scholarship-opportunities-for-2016-2017/ to access instructions. See Mrs. Clark for questions. Submission deadline is April 4, 2016.
Gaston College Scholars Award 2016 - One deserving graduate from each public high school in the college's service area will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Applicants must have a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.6 and demonstrate financial need. To obtain an application, visit www.gastoncountyscholarships.com Return completed applications to Mrs. Clark by April 1, 2016.
NC Society of Accountants Scholarship - Award is $600 scholarship. Applicant must have a desire to enter the field of accounting. See Mrs. Clark for an application. Completed applications are due by April 15, 2016,

The Locke Bell Family Scholarship - Award is $2,000 to Gaston College. Criteria includes need, character, and academic achievement. Special priority will be given to applicants' participation in the Boys and Girls club; however, this is not a requirement. Applications are due by March 30, 2016.
John E. Willoughby Scholarship - Applicants must be blind or have significant hearing impairment, or be a child or spouse of an individual who is blind or has significant hearing impairment. Other criteria used shall include academic achievement, character, and financial need. Applications are due March 29, 2016.
William P. and Odessa Swann Phillips Scholarship - Award is two $2,000 scholarships available to deserving African American high school seniors. Criteria includes financial need, work ethic, strong positive moral character, and academic achievement. Applications must be submitted by March 29, 2016.
The Mildred J. Sadler Scholarship - Award is $1,000 scholarship available to a deserving African American high school senior. Criteria includes financial need, work ethic, strong positive moral character, and academic achievement. Applications must be submitted by March 29, 2016.
Max J. Fowler Scholarship - Award is a $500 scholarship for either a traditional student or returning student with plans to complete an undergraduate degree at NC State University in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences or College of Engineering. Applications must be submitted by March 29, 2016.
The Tom Browne Scholarship - Award is several $1,000 scholarships to help young people obtain a college education and/or advanced vocational training for careers in the construction industry. Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in the professional field of construction or related trades/professions. Planned course of study may include either four-year school in architecture and engineering or community college/technical school courses in such areas as as civil technology, HVAC, and welding. Applications must be submitted by March 29, 2016.
Bess Chapel UMC/Brad Baxter Scholarship - Award $500 to help a Gaston or Lincoln County student attend a college or university. Applicants must demonstrate exceptional character both in school and off campus. Applications must be submitted by March 30, 2016.
The Alfred W. Bohanan Scholarship - Award is two $2,000 scholarships to students pursuing careers with Trade Degrees (i.e. machining, air conditioning, auto mechanics, construction, plumbing, etc.) who plan to attend Gaston College, Cleveland Community College, York Technical College, or Central Piedmont Community College. The recipient must be employed part-time for at least 20 hours per week while attending school. Applications must be submitted by May 18, 2016.
Cramerton ABC Board Scholarship - Award is $5,000 to one Stuart Cramer High School senior. This scholarship is based on an evaluation of the essays submitted. See Mrs. Clark for an information sheet. All essays must be returned to Mrs. Clark by 3:00 on March 24, 2016.
George & Patricia Barnard "We Believe in You" Scholarship - Award is $5,000 per year for four years. The Barnard family established this scholarship to help Gaston County high school seniors attend college.
The criteria for this award are as follows:
Typically a GPA of 3.0 or better
College Preparatory Course of Study
Evidence of participation in extracurricular activities
Evidence of leadership, motivation, and initiative
Evidence of strong financial need, typically household income under $40,000
Strong preference given to student showing perseverance in the face of adversity (financial, family, health, etc.)

Paul F. Fuller Scholarship - Applicants must have participated in the Gaston County Schools mentoring program for a minimum of one year at any grade level (elementary, middle, high school) and exhibit strong academic effort toward achievement. Applicants must also write a personal essay of up to 500 words describing “How being mentored has influenced my life”. Obtain an application by visiting www.gastoncountyscholarships.com Applicant deadline is April 4, 2016.
The American Association of Blacks in Energy Scholarship - This organization seeks to help under represented minorities pay for college. Applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and plan to major in business, physical sciences, technology, or engineering or math in preparation for a career in the energy sector. Charlotte Metro Area Relocation Council Scholarship - One-time award of $1,000. Applicants must have relocated more than 50 miles and changed schools due to their family’s relocation during grades 9th-12th and a minimum GPA of 3.0 Visit www.gastoncountyscholarships.com for an application. Completed applications must be POSTMARKED by March 5, 2016.
Gaston Gazette's Best & Brightest - Again this year, The Gaston Gazette is sponsoring the Best and Brightest scholarship program to recognize outstanding high school seniors. One senior from each high school will be chosen for the Best and Brightest honor and have an opportunity to compete for college scholarships. The deadline to apply is March 14. R. Flake Shaw Scholarship - Farm Bureau awards annually graduating seniors who are pursuing a future in in the agriculture industry. They award six university-level scholarships in the amount of $4,000 per year and two community college scholarships in the amount of $1,000 per year. Submission deadline is March 4, 2016. Jarman Family Scholarship - This scholarship is to help deserving children of full-time religious ministers in North and South Carolina to obtain a college degree. See Mrs. Clark for an application. Completed applications and supporting documents must be POSTMARKED by March 1, 2016.
The Clyde & Dezaree Bracket Family Scholarship - Award is several $1,000 scholarships. Scholarship criteria include need, character, and academic achievement. Applicants must have plans to obtain a college or advanced technical education. See Mrs. Clark for an application. Completed application and supporting documents must be POSTMARKED by March 2, 2016.
Stuart Cramer Friends for Lawson Scholarship - Friends for Lawson will offer two $500 scholarships to graduating seniors from SCHS. Visit www.gastoncountyscholarships.com for an application. Return completed applications to your school counselor by March 24, 2016.
Gaston County Extension & Community Association Scholarship - This scholarship is available to Gaston County high school seniors. Visit www.gastoncountyscholarships.com for an application. Submission deadline is April 7, 2016.
Ruth Angel Grant-in-Aid Scholarship - The Ruth Angel Grant-In-Aid from the Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma will be awarded to a high school senior from Gaston County who plans to enter a college or university to complete his/her degree program in education and teach in North Carolina. Return no later than March 18, 2016 to your School Counselor. Visit www.gastoncountyscholarships.com for an application.
NC Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship - Every year, the Alpha Delta Kappa -Beta Rho Chapter awards high school seniors with scholarships. Included in the packet is information for three separate scholarships for which students may apply. Read each description carefully. Obtain the scholarship packet at www.gastoncountyscholarships.com All completed applications must be submitted by March 15, 2016.
SECU Foundation "People Helping People" Scholarship - One graduating senior from SCHS will receive this $10,000 scholarship from the State Employees Credit Union Foundation. The award is payable at $1,250 per semester. Eligibility is as follows: Must be a US Citizen, must have plans to attend one of the 17 UNC system universities, must have at least a 2.5 GPA, must have demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement. Scholarship Tips: How to Impress the Judges
TIPS FOR WRITING EFFECTIVE SCHOLARSHIP ESSAYS
- Read the instructions and make sure you understand them before you start writing.
- Think about what you are going to write and organize your thoughts before you start writing.
- Begin the writing process by writing an outline.
- Make sure your outline touches on every aspect required per the instructions.
- Write your essay by elaborating on each of the points in your outline.
- Use clear, concise and simple language throughout the essay.
- State your accomplishments without coming across as if you are bragging.
- Make sure your grammar and spelling are impeccable.
- Read the question again and then read your essay to be certain that the essay addresses every point.
- Have someone with strong writing and editing skills proofread the essay before you submit it.
