April 19, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Westwood Families,
One of the biggest events of the year is coming up on April 28. It’s the lock-in. Students have been asking about it all year. The lock-in is a student event held at Westwood for grade 7 and 8 students, 2:30-4:30 p.m., and grade 5 and 6 students, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Students attending the lock in will need to have rides home. We will have a DJ, inflatables, bingo, and snacks. It is a great time for the students to connect and have some fun.
Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments will continue next Tuesday and Wednesday and are focused on math. We will run the same alternate schedule we did this week on testing days.
There are some great community and school events coming up that I hope you’ll check out including this week’s opening of the high school musical, “Matilda.” See the Community Education section.
We have about eight weeks of school left for this year. Teachers will be communicating with parents on learning needs for individual students the first week of May so each student is ready for next year.
Have a great week,
Tom Larson
Principal
Please help: Required iPad Update and Apple ID/Apple Classroom Sign-In Fix
Apple recently released an update (iOS 16.4+) which has alleviated a disruptive bug that causes student Apple IDs to sign out. This causes major disruptions including student data not being backed up and the inability to use Apple Classroom.
Please help students follow the steps provided here to resolve this issue:
- Update iPads to iOS 16.4 or higher. This can be done by going to Settings>General>Software Update.
- After the iPads are updated, or if they are already up to date, go to Settings. If you see a red icon under your name/iCloud account, tap on “Update Apple ID Settings” and sign back into the school Apple ID.
- Once signed back in, this message will go away.
If you have any questions, contact the help desk 763-600-5555, techsupport@district16.org.

Career Fair forges connections
Energy, volume and engagement were high at the second annual career fair on April 6 where 118 organizations connected with nearly 2,000 Spring Lake Park High School students to support career exploration and employment.
There were therapy dogs, robots, hair jewels, a basketball hoop, hammers, simulators, candy (so much candy) . . . and buzz. The Spring Lake Park High School auxiliary gym came alive as students wandered the aisles and engaged with employers and colleges to learn more about immediate job openings, summer opportunities and longer-term career paths.

"Music Around The Globe"
On Monday, the Westwood 5th graders attended the concert, "Music Around The Globe" performed by the Minnesota Orchestra at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis! The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance, where they experienced music from China, Mexico, the United States, Egypt, and Eastern Europe! The 5th graders look forward to learning more about world cultures through music this year!

Mrs. Ganske's Red Team scientists celebrated the end of their genetics studies by extracting DNA from strawberries.
Minnesota's History
6AIM has been reading and learning about Minnesota’s history, including changes over time, early Native tribes, and finding connections in our own histories and stories. To build more background knowledge, they recently visited the MN History Center for a full day of learning more about our amazing state!
Earth Day
April 22 is Earth Day. The main aim at Earth Day is to raise awareness of the negative impact our actions as mankind have on our environment and earth as a whole. To celebrate Earth Day, the 7th grade Jr. Panther Mentors participated in the “The Great Global Cleanup.” They took advantage of the warm weather this last week and cleaned up the school grounds.
