FROM THE PRINCIPAL...TONY WHITE

A common question our staff and I are asked by our families is: "What can we do at home to support what you are doing here at school?" To a tee, we all answer similarly: Read with your kids. Read to them when they're young, read with them when they're able to start taking more complex text on themselves, and ask them about what they're reading when they're older. If your child likes to read a certain favorite book over and over, that's all right. It is known as "repeated reading," and can deepen their comprehension as the second time and beyond through the text, readers are no longer working as hard to decode words as they are to find deeper meaning. As your children read more with you, you will find their passion for literacy grows, your relationship takes on a new dimension, and their vocabulary expands.

There is another benefit to our Eagles reading: it develops and builds their empathy. As they read or listen to stories, their minds make movies of the text they are taking in. As they make those mental movies, they feel the feelings of the characters in the story and they begin to understand their perspectives, motivations, and emotions. This is why we as adults can so vividly remember the books we read when we were our children's age. We connected deeply on an emotional level to a book and it stuck with us.

While we are on the topic of empathy, I will give one final plug for our "Resilience" evening next Wednesday at 6:00 in our community room. I hope to see you there. I know how hard it can be to go to an evening event after a day of hard work, but I promise this will be worth your time and energy.

Have a wonderful weekend, Norton Creek!

Ask your child about the Monarch / Bluestem reading event taking place at Norton Creek now through March 1st. Students are encouraged to read as many Monarch or Bluestem 2020 books as they can depending on their grade level. They will complete a response form and bingo sheet to track their reading. Look for more information coming home with your child by Friday, September 6th.
