Ancient Greece!
Greek urban centers began developing in the 8th century b.c.e. and ushered in the period of Archaic Greece and the colonization of the Mediterranean basin.
The period of "Classical Greece" lasted from the 5th to the 4th centuries b.c.e., beginning with the Greco-Persian Wars.
After that, Alexander the Great's conquests caused the expansion of Hellenistic civilization from Central Asia to the western Mediterranean Sea. The expansion ended with the conquests and annexations of the eastern Mediterranean world by the Roman Republic.
Classical Greek culture (especially philosophy) was very influential in Ancient Rome; and because of this influence, Classical Greek culture is generally thought to be the basis for modern Western culture---the "cradle of Western civilization."
