News from the String Department

3rd, 4th, & 5th Grade

4th grade IM

All 4th grade students have the opportunity to study an instrument when they come to I.M. (Instrumental Music) class twice a cycle. We have been having fun demonstrating all of the different instruments to them and they will be trying them out throughout the month of September. A letter explaining this process in further detail is sent home this month. It includes an invitation to come to an instrumental parent information meeting on either October 5th or 6th. We are looking forward to a year of music-making!

5th Grade orchestra and lessons

Dear Parents, June 2016

Welcome to the fifth grade lesson and orchestra program! Your child will receive a group lesson once a week starting in September. Orchestra starts in mid-October and meets on cycle days 2-4-6. You will receive more information in September. We do not provide an instrument for your child after the fourth grade beginner program except for basses, which can still be rented from the school. Violins, violas and cellos can be rented from one of the following local music stores:

· Stringed Instrument Services

· The String House

1531 Monroe Ave., Rochester

· Sullivan Violins

120 East Ave., Rochester

· Music and Arts

Please be sure to purchase insurance for the instrument; Wooden instruments and bows break. Your child will also need the following:

· String Basics Book 1*

· Suzuki Book 1 (all except bass)

· Shoulder rest (violin and viola only)

· Music stand

· Rock stop or end pin strap (cello and bass only)

· Solo Time for Strings Book 1 (bass only)

*Most of the students already have String Basics. We started it in 4th grade.
