School News
YES Parents,
On Wednesday afternoon, we kicked off our YES PTO Fundraiser – The Red Carpet Run – with an energetic and entertaining pep rally. We hope that your student came home excited about the Red Carpet Run Fundraiser.
This year, we are setting our fundraising goal at $25,000, a goal we hope that you can help us reach. Thanks to your donations to our fundraiser last year, we were able to purchase seven iPads for every homeroom class. By having the iPads housed in the classroom, teachers are able to have immediate access to technology that can be used to support instruction. This year, we would like to make additional technology purchases so we can continue to come closer to having a device available to every student in our school.
We hope that you will help us reach our goal by contributing to our Red Carpet Run Fundraiser.
Thank you,
Pete Forster

Nurse Notes with Nurse Julia
Did you know?
Backpacks that are too heavy or carried incorrectly can injure muscles or joints,
contribute to back, shoulder and neck pain, and lead to poor posture.
The proper backpack:
- Is no wider than the user’s chest
- Is worn no higher than the base of the neck
- Is worn no lower than 2-4 inches below waist
- Has wide padded shoulder straps on both sides
Encourage the use of both shoulder straps and unload unnecessary items for a healthier back.

Music Messages from Mrs. Oprandy
YES students learned about the origins of all of the unpitched instruments in the music classroom and practiced playing them. While learning to sing the song “Thank You,” students focused on matching pitch and singing as one voice. Students continued their exploration of beat, rhythm, and movement by playing the circle game, “Zack, Betty-Betty”.
Fourth graders learned more about rhythm versus beat. Students began composing their own rhythms, focusing on long and short rhythm syllables. After composing, students played their compositions on unpitched instruments and performed their rhythms for others.
Fifth graders reviewed quarter and eighth notes and quarter rest. They composed their own rhythms using these notations, played their compositions on unpitched instruments, and performed their rhythms for others. Fifth graders also learned about 4/4 time signature.
Art Action with Mr. Daniel
We have an exciting time planned for Art! The projects below are currently in progress:
FOURTH GRADE ART PROJECT: "Design Your Own Mall" (A Lesson in Linear Perspective)
Our fourth grade artists will use the elements of art and the principles of design to develop their own mall designs. They will use linear perspective to develop their store drawings. They will also design their stores according to a specific theme (i.e. dessert shops, clothing stores, book stores, art supply stores, sporting goods, etc.)
FIFTH GRADE ART PROJECT: "Design Your Own Dream Interior Space" (A Lesson in Linear Perspective)
Our fifth grade artists will use the elements of art, the principles of design and their creative ability to develop a "Dream Interior Space." They will use the principles of linear perspective to create the appearance of depth within their space. These rooms will be developed according to a specific theme (i.e. favorite sports team, animal print, geometric shapes, favorite color scheme, an aquatic world, video game, cartoon character, etc.)
Venture Visit with Mrs. Roberts
We are moving into Simple Machines. The students are working with levers and incline planes. They are building their own class 1 lever at home. We will use these levers in class to test different reactions. The students are constructing as well as discovering that the height of the incline plane changes the force of the marble(s) and/or balls. Through the testing of the reactions, the students will see the force needed to move a given object and to change the direction of the lever to start the next reaction. This gives the students the opportunity to problem solve and work in teams to troubleshoot the solutions together! We will also continue to work through the other simple machines: the screw, wedge, pulley, and wheel & axle.
If you would like to see the videos and example photos of how we are going to use your child’s Class 1 Lever, please go to my website and check out the “Lever” page, https://www.auburnschools.org/Page/4392!

Media Memos with Mrs. McGilberry
The Book Fair will be held in the library beginning October 1st and closing at 11:00 am on Friday, the 5th. Families may stop by to shop during the Y.E.S. Birthday Party on Monday, October 1st between 4:30-6:00 pm. It will also be open during the guest lunches on Wednesday and Thursday (Oct. 3rd and 4th) and also during Dad's League on Friday morning. There are many great books for sale!
During their weekly media time, students in fourth grade are doing a genre study, and fifth graders are comparing online and print reference resources.
The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
October Guidance lessons will focus on safety issues. Parents, please make sure your children know their full address and contact number for at least one parent. Our classes will have prevention lessons based on Erin’s Law. Erin’s Law (legislative law HB 197) was signed into effect on June 4, 2015. This law requires all public school systems to provide age appropriate child sexual abuse prevention education in Pre-K through 12th grades. Safe communities, internet safety, and personal boundaries lessons will be delivered through Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum. Please visit the website for more information: www.safersmarterkids.org.
We will also be celebrating Red Ribbon Week during the last full week of October. This is a national campaign focusing on drug and violence prevention awareness. Red Ribbons have been worn since 1985 to help educate and encourage children to participate in drug prevention activities. Be on the lookout for our “Dress up” flyer. Let’s have fun dressing up and celebrating good choices.
Quote of the month:
Gain peace inside yourself by practicing good character traits such as honesty, respect, responsibility and courage.
*When you are honest, you never have to feel guilty.
*When you respect others and act responsibly you gain higher self-esteem.
*It takes courage to practice good character traits when those around you choose not to do the same, but it’s peaceful to know you have chosen the right thing.
