Hitting Homeruns for a living vs. Being a teacher
"How far can a guy really go playing baseball? I guess that's what I wonder about. I can only thank God that I played the game well enough that maybe it meant something. Maybe in the end, I can do as much good, in my way, as, say, a teacher. That's what Mama wanted me to be."

I had the opportunity to read I Had a Hammer, the autobiography of Hank Aaron over the break. Hank Aaron is viewed by many as the real home run king having hit 755 home runs in his career breaking Babe Ruth's record. One of the most startling aspects of this book was the quote that I shared above. This appeared early in the book and speaks profoundly about how an individual who is easily viewed as one of the greatest baseball players of all time view teachers! As we enter a new year and approach the end of the semester, please take this idea to heart and please realize your value and how much good you can do. All of you, for various reasons, the least of which being your potential talents as baseball players, have chosen being teacher over hitting home runs for a living, and for that, I thank you!
