Rose Parade Float Viewing Event
On January 2, 2019, Health Programs Staff hosted a booth at the Rose Parade float viewing event located outside PHS. We marketed our Farm to School Program and collected donations for oranges and water. Hundreds of tourists learned about the school garden program in PUSD and got a peek at the Tournament of Roses sponsored school garden at PHS.
Muir Ranch is...
On Veterans Day, 2018, PUSD hosted C5LA (http://www.c5la.org/) at John Muir High School. The students helped Health Programs Master Gardener Jill McArthur with the Muir Ranch "reinvention."
...looking good!
Pasadena USD Mental Health Services Update
PUSD Mental Health Services program was invited to participate in a panel at the Children Youth and Families (CYF) Immersion conference hosted by USC’s School of Social Work in early January 2019. The team was invited to share their expertise in utilizing and training staff and interns in the MAP EBP (Managing and Adapting Practices, Evidence-Based Practice) model. Staff representing PUSD MHS included Natasha Stebbins, LCSW, Stephanie Martinez, ASW, and Vanessa Sedano, a current intern from USC’s MSW program. Natasha Stebbins is one of our PUSD MHS supervisors and is MAP certified as an in-house trainer; she is also a Field Instructor for USC’s School of Social Work. Stephanie Martinez is a former intern from USC and is currently one of our full time clinicians. Vanessa Sedano is a current 2nd year MSW Candidate completing her field placement at PUSD’s MHS program. They were delighted to share information about the MAP EBP training program and shared how valuable this EBP is in delivering trauma informed and efficient treatment interventions to clients, including PUSD students and their families. The MAP training program has been in existence at PUSD MHS since 2012 and continues to be a successful training ground for the program. PUSD MH Services program looks forward to participating in future CYF Immersion conferences and look forward to continue being a training institute for the USC School of Social Work.
Office of Enrollment, Permits, and Student Records
Office of Enrollment, Permits and Student Records Staff currently participating in school tours
In order to better serve our community of PUSD parents, Office of Enrollment Permits and Student Records staff is participating in elementary, middle and high school tours. When parents visit our district office asking about various schools, we will be able to provide them with first-hand information. Our staff always encourages parents to visit their school of residence before visiting any other schools they may be interested in. All school tour information can be found on the https://2019.openenrollment.info/ website.
Office of Child Welfare, Attendance, and Safety
The Office of Child Welfare, Attendance & Safety trains high school students to serve as peer mentors to younger students. The purpose of the Mentors for Life mentoring program is to establish a trusting relationship between a student and caring peers who offer encouragement, guidance, and support. The goal is to increase school’s graduation rate and improve attendance by developing the competence and character of participating students. The weekly activities consist of community service, leadership, improving social skills, and team building. One peer mentor states, “It was important to me that I make a difference on the life of a student, no matter how small it may have been. Mentoring has a positive effect on the peer mentor and the mentee”.
