DECEMBER 4, 2020
Tubman Family
I hope everyone and your loved ones are doing well. As we are entering the winter season, the COVID cases seem to be rising in our state. Please take the necessary precautions to keep you and your family safe.
The month of December has arrived, and we only have ten school days until winter break. Quarter 2 progress reports will be mailed out on Friday, December 18th. If your scholar is struggling academically in any course, please reach out to the teacher. If you need additional assistance, please contact our counselors and administrators. Their information is located towards the bottom of the newsletter.
If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. We all here to support our scholars.

OREGON MESA(Math Engineering Science Achievement)
Oregon MESA is an invention equity program out of Portland State University that serves historically underrepresented students in STEM fields. MESA's mission is to provide those students underrepresented in STEM fields with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to develop their talents, explore technology-based careers, enter college, and compete successfully in the workforce.
I wanted to let you know about a new MESA program, Invention Clubs. Our Invention Clubs are for students who have been affected the most by the pandemic, those who are low income and are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Our Invention Clubs are an opportunity for 6th to 12th-grade students who do not have a MESA chapter at their school to participate in the MESA experience. Invention Clubs follow the MESA Schools curriculum but are not associated with any specific school, just regions. The MESA regions are divided by county, with our current counties being Washington County, Multnomah County, Clackamas County, and Marion County.
Below is further information:
A flyer about Invention Clubs in English and Spanish
A slide deck to share with school/community partners or scholars directly
Scholars can fill out an interest form (English, Spanish). MESA will then see if there is an Invention Club in their area to join.

SCHOOL-BASED HEALTH CENTERS
The Student Success and Health Department is pleased to announce the opening of the Benson Wellness Center, joining Roosevelt as the second school-based health center to re-open in PPS since the start of the COVID-19 crisis. The Benson Wellness Center, sponsored by Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), at Benson Polytech High School, provides preventative health services for PPS students ages 7-21.
As a reminder, any PPS student can go to any open Student Health and Wellness Center nearest to them to access services. In addition to Benson and Roosevelt, Student Health Centers at David Douglas and Parkrose high schools remain open.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Hey All!
Here is a BINGO game with physical activity ideas for families (shared from Andrew and Charlene at the Multnomah County Health Department).
This interactive game has physical activity ideas that families can do inside their homes or outside their neighborhoods. If participants complete a Black-out bingo, they will be entered into a raffle to win a bike or inside exercise equipment.
REACH is culturally specific for the Black community. So we are rewarding the prizes for Black youths and families.

Open Enrollment/Application Process
A reminder that the Open Enrollment window to apply for Benson, MLC, or Jefferson (if you are not in the dual-assignment cluster) closes at 5:00 pm on December 11. The application to apply for Benson, Jefferson, and MLC is all online and can be found on the PPS website on the Enrollment & Transfer page found here: https://www.pps.net/Page/2343. You have until December 11 to fill it out.
After you click on the above link, scroll down to the middle of the page and click the "Apply Now" button in the 2021-22 Middle and High School Transfer Cycle box. It will take you to a separate page where you will be asked to log in. You may need to set up a family account, which is pretty easy to do. Scroll down and click on "If you don't have an account, please sign up first." Follow the steps to set up your account, and from there, it will take you to the PPS application for high school (there is not a specific Benson application this year). It's really just a form that asks what your first, second, and third choices for high school are. List your choices in order of preference. You don't have to list three choices if you don't have three; list as many choices (up to three) as you have.
