From School Administration
As I write this message, more than 1/3 of the school year has been completed. The students and staff members at Lisbon Elementary are working diligently toward their goals and are growing on a daily basis. It is a pleasure to work with your children daily and to see them grow in so many ways. Our winter break has arrived, and 2018 will be here before we know it. Our last day of classes is today, Friday, December 22, and students will report back to school on Tuesday, January 2.
It has been another outstanding month here at Lisbon with two magical evenings of music! A few weeks ago our Orchestra students performed beautifully at both their daytime and evening concerts. Last week, our Band, Chorus, and Handbell Ensemble was absolutely amazing! I want to thank all our parents, grandparents, friends, and family members who came out in support of our very talented students! A great big THANK YOU to Mr. Carter and Mrs. Trueblood for their hard work and dedication to our Lisbon music programs. Their leadership and talents are like none other in the county and we are truly lucky to have them here at Lisbon with us!
We want to personally thank all of our parents who have been attending our monthly PTA meetings. It is truly great to see your involvement in your child’s education. Our PTA provides many programs and events for our LES school community. For our November parent-teacher conferences, PTA provided a fabulous dinner to our Lisbon staff from Olive Garden. Thank you!
I would like to wish all of our families a safe and joyous Holiday Season! During the break, I hope that you experience a slower pace with some time to relax and build fond memories that will be treasured in the years ahead. It has been a wonderful year, and the students and staff at Lisbon Elementary are looking forward to making 2018 even better. Our Lisbon Lines newsletter will return in the New Year on January 5, 2018. Thank you for all of your involvement and support.
Mrs. Anoff
Congratulations
Congratulations to Mrs. Nicol! I am so excited to share with you that Mrs. Nicol has successfully earned her National Board Certification. Over the past two years, Mrs. Nicol completed four components, one assessment and 3 portfolios. Mrs. Nicol’s accomplishment is a strong reflection of her continued dedication to the students here at Lisbon Elementary, Howard County Public School System, and to the education profession. All true professions are led by their most accomplished practitioners. As a National Board Certified Teacher, Mrs. Nicol is among a small number of elite educators with a proven record of accomplished teaching. We are so incredibly PROUD of Mrs. Nicol and honored that she is a part of the Lisbon Elementary School community!
To the Parents of our Fifth Graders:
It is hard to believe that we need to talk middle school already. Glenwood Middle School will have a Parent Information Night on Thursday, January 18th at 6:30 p.m. The GT Orientation will occur the same date at 5:30 p.m. The SNOW DATE has been set for Thursday, February 1st. Please mark your calendar!

Emergency And Weather-related School Closing Details
If it is necessary for the superintendent to close or delay the start of schools due to inclement weather or other emergencies, parents may obtain information from the sources listed above.
If Howard County public schools open one or two hours late, there is no half-day prekindergarten/RECC. If schools are closed, or closed early due to weather conditions, all after-school and evening activities, both school and non-school, scheduled in school facilities are canceled.
On weekends and holidays, if the Howard County Snow Emergency Plan is in effect by 7 a.m., activities already in progress may be completed but any activity scheduled to begin after that time is canceled.
During times of emergency or adverse weather conditions, we request that you do not call your child’s school or the central office as it is important to keep phone lines free for emergency calls.
Early Dismissals For Inclement Weather
If inclement weather conditions develop during the school day, the Director of Transportation follows the procedures used to determine late openings or school closures. Generally, a decision to close schools early is made no later than 10:30 a.m. In deciding whether or not to close schools early, the Superintendent will consult with the Director of Transportation, the Deputy Superintendent, the Director of Operations, the Community Services Specialist, the Coordinator of Athletics, the Director of Public Relations, and other staff members as appropriate.
School Sponsored and Community Sponsored After-School and Evening Activities
- If schools are dismissed early for inclement weather, all after-school and evening activities in schools—both school sponsored and community sponsored—are cancelled.
High School Athletics
- If schools are dismissed early due to inclement weather, all high school athletic practices and games are cancelled.
