How can you help your child "Learn to Read" or "Read to Learn" at home?
The reading focus changes in grades 3-6, students are now "reading to learn." This means they are focusing on thinking about text and using evidence to comprehend and support their learning of that text.
How can you help? Please encourage your child(ren) to read four to five days per week for 15-20 minutes. Support them when they decode words, remind them of the decoding strategies and encourage them to use these to figure out these unknown words. Ask your child(ren) questions about what they are reading. Start with who, what, where, why, and when questions and then move into open ended questions. When they are unable to answer the questions, encourage them to refer back to the text for help.
The more children read, the better readers they will become! Strong readers become great writers and can solve different kinds of math problems!
