News from Mrs. Hilcher- Principal of Grapevine Elementary

Week of September 4 - September 8

Wow! What a wonderful first two weeks of school we've had at GES! The first ten days of school have been full of learning new school routines, practicing emergency drills, getting to know new friends, as well as, parent information night. We thank you for supporting your GES student(s) and helping us make this a wonderful school year.

Our community is known for its generosity and this week was proof of that! Your donations to provide relief to those who were impacted by Hurricane Harvey was a testament to that giving spirit. Thanks to your donations, we were able to take a van load full of items to the Trusted World organization in Dallas. We also were able to make a sizable donation to the SPCA of Texas. A huge thank you to Angela Horn for organizing our donation AND to Sandra Wiley for delivering our campus donations over the weekend! Many people throughout southeast Texas will benefit from these items.

On that note, we have another opportunity for donating #HarveyRelief if you still want to contribute. We have a GES parent, Mr. Nicholson, who is traveling to the Houston area on Thursday to provide relief. He has generously offered to take items down for us. The following items are being collected through Wednesday, 9/6:

  • Bug spray
  • Water
  • Diapers
  • Medical devices - especially walking canes and wheelchairs
  • First aid kits
  • Crayons/Coloring Books/Toys/Games

Thank you for your generous giving!

Snack Donations

For some of our families, providing a nutritious snack each day to assist their GES star’s performance throughout the day does not happen consistently because of food insecurities. If you are able, please donate individually packaged Goldfish or pretzels in order to help us provide that snack for students that arrive at school without it because of the insecurities. This would not pertain to students that simply forgot a snack that day. If your Star forgets his/her snack often, sending multiple days worth of snacks might help. For questions, please feel free to contact Angela Horn at angela.horn@gcisd.net or 817-251-5740. Thank you for your continued generosity and thoughtfulness.

New Bullying Law

A new bullying law took effect September 1st, yet GCISD began August 21st with it in place. One law that directly impacts our students is Senate Bill 179, commonly known as “David’s Law”. David's Law makes student harassment, bullying, and cyberbullying a criminal offense. The major change from the previous legislation is that it now covers cyber bullying, and the definition of bullying has been expanded to include even one single significant act toward another person. Additionally, schools have the authority to investigate cyberbullying and to work with law enforcement on such investigations.

At Grapevine Elementary, student safety, physical and emotional, is our number one priority. Our school counselor, Mrs. Horn, will be discussing these topics with 4th and 5th graders to explain the law and share with them the seriousness of these issues. She will emphasize digital citizenship as it relates to social media, things they might post about another student, and even texting. Please reiterate with your student(s) the importance of not posting hurtful things about other people, as this can become a disciplinary issue at school as well as a legal problem if it's serious enough.

If a student believes they are a victim of cyberbullying/bullying or if a teacher or other school personnel have knowledge about an incident of cyberbullying/bullying, they should immediately report it to a campus staff member. Thank you for reiterating with your GES Stars the importance of respecting one another both in person and online.

Community Champions

I wanted to make sure that all of our GES parents were aware of this opportunity to become a part of GCISD's first Community Champions program (described below). This program will be limited to 40 participants and applications will be accepted starting Tuesday, September 5th.

GES Clubs Information

We are excited to share a variety of club opportunities with our GES Stars again this year. In an effort to give student club information in a concise manner we have included a short synopsis of each offering with applications and/or permission form links. Please take the time to review and discuss the club options with your child and encourage them to participate in a club that interests them. Please be aware that several clubs meet on the same days and students will need to make a choice regarding which clubs they would like to participate in most.

Please use THIS LINK to access information about all the opportunities for our Stars this year. Links are provided for applications under each description. *Please note the grade levels and individual application due dates for each specific club. (Many application due dates have passed.)

Carnival Auction Committee

The Auction Committee is looking for 1-2 people to be Grade Level Committee Members to coordinate Auction Baskets for the entire grade. Each grade level will be assigned several baskets instead of assigning them per class. The Grade Level Committee Members will work with the teachers and room parents to communicate with each class in your grade what the baskets are, when & how donations will be collected, and assist with basket wrapping. You may recruit as much or as little help for your grade as you would like. Our goal is to ease the work load of the room parent by creating a separate committee; please know if you would like to serve as both room parent and on the auction committee we are happy to have you!
    • The first Auction Meeting to hear more information will be held immediately following the Home Room Parent Meeting on 9/7.

    • We also are in need of help collecting donations from individuals and companies. Please take a look at our sign up to sign up for both the committee and to help with individual donations! http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f44aea62ea3ff2-2017

For questions, please contact: junell.dubois@gmail.com

Reminders

  • Please remember that our driveways in the back of campus are marked as Entrance and Exit Only. We've been made aware of drivers who are entering the parking lot via the exit lanes. This puts students and families in danger. We appreciate your cooperation following traffic signs.
  • If you are picking up a PreK - 2nd grade student in the front loop, they will need to load on the passenger side. We are not able to load students in cars on the driver's side doors due to traffic and safety concerns for both students & staff. If you are unable to load them on the passenger side of your car, please park in the back parking lot and walk through the building to meet them at their dismissal location.

Birthdays at GES

Birthdays are special! Student birthdays may be recognized in the classroom at the end of the day. Birthday celebrations may not be conducted in the cafeteria while meals are being served. If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, we recommend the following: donate a book to the library in your child’s name or choose a new pencil or cool eraser for each student in your child’s class. Due to the high number of students with food allergies, we are not allowed to celebrate birthdays with any food items. Birthday sweet treats or snacks will no longer be served. Flowers, balloons, etc. for students should not be delivered to the school (per the handbook). These will not be brought to the classrooms and cannot go home on the buses. So please reserve these type of gifts for home.

Students may distribute birthday party invitations only if they include the entire class. If every student in the classroom is not receiving a birthday party invitation, invitations will not be distributed at school. In this case, parents are encouraged to use the PTA directory to send invitations in the mail.
