Dear Viking Families,
We refer to our students, their families and CHS staff as our “Viking Family”. This reference means we take care of one another. One way we take care of each other at CHS is to ask students and staff to keep an eye out for the mistreatment of others. We remind students to tell an adult if they see or experience bullying or harassment. Please have a talk with your CHS student about being proactive in the prevention of harassment and bullying. Students have an important role in creating and sustaining a caring and safe learning environment for all.
Together we can make a difference.
~ CHS Administration
What can all CHS students do?
Make others feel accepted.
Welcome new students.
Be supportive.
Use peer pressure for good.
If you are being bullied or harassed:
Tell someone! Tell your parents and your friends. Also talk to your counselor or to a favorite teacher. Sometimes just having things out in the open can be enough to make bullies stop.
The Coeur d Alene School District has an anti-bullying policy. If the bullying is happening, tell a counselor, principal or any of your teachers. We can help.
Don’t think of it as tattling. Think of it as standing up for yourself.
If you are being bullied, chances are the bullying is causing problems for others. By stopping the bullying, you are helping others and making our school a safe place.
Bullying can have lasting effects. Holding fear, frustration and anger inside is not healthy.
STAND UP AND SPEAK OUT.
what's with the green dot?
Green Dot is a violence prevention program focused on reducing incidents of interpersonal violence in the forms of physical assault, sexual assault or bullying, known as red dots. CHS currently has 25 students “bystander trained” to recognize and apply the 3D’s; Delegate, Direct & Distract. Below is an excerpt from the Green Dot bystander training manual.
Imagine a map covered with red dots. Each red dot on it represents an act of interpersonal violence (physical assault‚ sexual assault or bullying). A red dot is an unwanted touch, a hit, or a threat. A red dot is the cruel teasing, the humiliating Facebook post, the exclusion. Violence in our school is the accumulation of individual decisions‚ moments‚ values‚ and actions made by all of us. It’s hard to know how many red dots are on our map - but we do know there have been enough that too many that go to this school end up hurt.
Now imagine adding a green dot in the middle of all those red dots on our map. A green dot is any behavior, choice or action that promotes safety and communicates that violence is not okay with us. A green dot is pulling a friend out of a high risk situation or having a conversation with a classmate about how important this issue is. A green dot liking a bystander video on Facebook, wearing a pin on our backpack, t-shirt or jacket, or checking in on the kid you saw bullied in the locker room. A green dot is checking on a friend you are worried about, giving a speech on prevention in class, writing an article for your school paper editor about Green Dot, or bringing a training to your student organization or team. A green dot is simply your individual choice at any given moment to make our school safer.
How many green dots will it take to begin outnumbering the red dots and reducing violence? How many of us will have to do 2 or 3 or 10 dots to make a difference? Even though we can’t know the exact number, we do know this. There are far more students in this school who don’t commit violence than who do. If just some of us were willing to step up – even in small ways – very quickly, green dots could take over the map – and less students would be hurt. Think about it. Will you do your green dot?
Bracken Curtis
National Merit Scholarship Finalist
Abbigail Shrontz
Emily Fooe
Valedictorian, Salutatorian and National Merit Scholarship Finalists
We are pleased to announce the valedictorian and salutatorian for the class of 2018. Bracken Curtis has earned the Valedictorian distinction and earned the maximum number of points possible as outlined in Board policy. Abbigail Shrontz has earned the position of Salutatorian.
Two CHS students have been chosen as National Merit Scholarship Finalists. Bracken Curtis and Emily Fooe were among the top 1% of students from around the world to be selected as finalists based upon their performance on the PSAT during their junior year in high school. Bracken has also earned the honor of being valedictorian of the class of 2018. Emily graduated from CHS after only three years and is now attending Arizona State University.
SAT Math Prep for Juniors!
The SAT is coming up on April 10th! Want help getting ready for it or figuring out the problems you missed on the PSAT? 50 minute study sessions will be offered starting the week of March 19th. Over the past 2 years, students who have come to these sessions have averaged an SAT math score that is over 60 points higher than their math score on the PSAT. See Mr. Edwards in room D1 for details or email: dedwards@cdaschools.org
