Week 24 Update (2/18)
The amount of support and positive energy from all stakeholders for our school system is outstanding. Hemlock Public School District's mission and vision is to innovate, collaborate, and educate our community of learners. We remain committed to communicating with you every week. This marks our 24th week of the 2020-2021 school year.
This week on Monday, students were off, but our staff was working with professional development. Their commitment to learning extends to their craft of teaching and learning; our instructional team spent time learning about technology improvements and ways to increase productivity and student engagement.
Our winter athletic teams are competing; home events can be viewed at NFHS TV and many of our road games. Despite the weather forecast, it will not be long, and spring sports will start practicing and preparing for their season.
It continues to be exciting to report that we have not had any new school-related cases of COVID-19 or school-related quarantines since our return to school after the holiday break. Click here to review our COVID-19 Dashboard with data updates in real-time. This link brings pertinent information together into one easy-to-access place.
We have examined our February and March calendar and, based on our staff's scheduled 2nd dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and have adjusted the schedule as shown below. This provides everyone advance notice to plan accordingly as we are uncertain about the various reactions staff may have we have made these days asynchronous.
Over the last few weeks, we have gathered feedback regarding our 2021-2022 calendar and will be processing that in the coming weeks. Do not hesitate to give me a call at 989.642.5282 or send me an email to killingbeck@hemlockps.com to share your thoughts. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.
All the best,

MHSAA Spring Sports Update
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Feb. 22 – The Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association approved today an adjustment to the Spring 2021 schedule delaying the start of practices in those sports one week to March 22 and competition to March 26 to accommodate a later end to Winter sports this season. The calendar change should alleviate pressures on indoor facility usage and athletes changing seasons with Winter sports concluding up to two weeks later this school year after a delayed start due to COVID-19.
The Council based its decision in part on feedback from a survey of MHSAA member high schools, which saw 74 percent favoring a delay in Spring sports activity of at least one week. State coaches associations for Spring sports also were consulted. Generally, the great majority of Michigan schools are unable to begin consistent Spring sports outdoor activity and competition until early April.
All Spring sports tournament dates remain as originally scheduled, with MHSAA Finals in baseball, softball and girls soccer concluding the 2020-21 postseason June 19.
The entire Spring sports season was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19. However, the Council approved an allowance for Spring teams to meet for voluntary practices over 16 contact days this past September and October. General conditioning with an unlimited number of students is currently allowed, with other out-of-season training (four-player workouts, open gyms/facilities) allowed to continue through March 21, with Council having eliminated the preseason downtime restriction for Spring sports this year.
The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary membership by more than 1,500 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition. No government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament entry fees from schools. Member schools which enforce these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract more than 1.4 million spectators each year.

Michigan Junior Duck Stamp Program
The United States Fish & Wildlife Service is accepting Michigan Junior Duck Stamp entries. All entries must be postmarked by Sunday, March 15th.
Each year thousands of students across the nation enter the contest. In 2020, 170+ students in grades K through 12 participated in Michigan. Public schools, private schools and students from home schools were represented. At each state, territory or district competition, 100 winners are chosen with one top winner, called the "Best of Show." The Best of Show's then compete in the national competition. One image is selected to become the Federal Junior Duck Stamp.
Entries for the Michigan Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest are due by March 15 of every year. Artwork must be of a North American duck, goose or swan. Registration information can be found on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Refuge's Junior Duck Stamp Program webpage.
