Happy Halloween
We had a great day today and a super fun afternoon! They looked great in their costumes today! The students are so excited for Halloween tomorrow. Please remind your kiddo to be safe and watch for traffic when crossing the street. I'm hoping the rain holds for trick or treating tomorrow night.
Thanks so much to Mrs. Shepherd for organizing our treats for today. Thanks to the Hoffman family, the Shepherd family, the Deegan family, the Mesner family and the McCafferty family for sending in supplies and food. Thanks so much to all the parents who were able to stop by and lend a hand!
Language Arts
- Reading: This week we read an excerpt from the famous radio play "Invasion from Mars," based off George Orwell's "The War of the Worlds." We read the play several times and listened to part of the original radio broadcast. The students loved it. We focused on story structure and inferences and predictions.
- Writing: Students worked on revising, editing and then completing the final draft of their fictional narrative. Students worked hard on making revisions.
- Grammar: This week we focused on verbs! We learned about action verbs, helping verbs, and linking verbs.
- Spelling: Our focus this week in spelling was the short "u" sound.
Math
This week in math, students were challenged with more algebraic thinking. They drew models and wrote equations to help solve comparison word problems. They also learned to multiply tens, hundreds, and thousands (6 x 5,000) and to estimate products using rounding.
Science and Social Studies
Science: In science this week students worked on how plants respond to their environment. This is a short chapter so we broke it up into sections and each group did a presentation for the class using iMovie. We also took the NWEA science test on Wednesday.
Social Studies: We wrapped up our chapter about the peopling of the United States and learned about five major ethnic groups and their contributions to our country. We also started our new chapter on the Northeast region. We started our learning about the rocky coast of the Northeast and the Appalachian Mountain Range.
