Pine Bend Elementary
June 2018
Principal Update
I hope you all have a fun-filled summer break! I'll look forward to seeing everyone back at Pine Bend in the fall!
Locker Clean Out Day!
Dakota County volunteers and student Green Team Spartans are partnering together to organize Pine Bend’s first sustainable locker clean out day! Students will begin cleaning out their lockers on Monday June 4th. In addition to collecting recycling and trash, unwanted reusable school supplies will be collected to prevent these items from going into the trash. Items placed in the reuse bins during clean out week will be utilized in our summer school program and provided to students in need.
Please talk to your child about which school supplies they should be bringing home and what they can leave at school. The following are examples of reusable school supplies that will be collected:
Pencils
Pens
Notebooks
Crayons
Markers
Folders
Scissors
Calculators
Glue
Rulers
Binders

Preschool
Preschool's first year at Pine Bend is coming to a close and we are so excited for our program's future here! We learned a lot over the year and are ready for Kindergarten. In May we met the gym teacher, music teacher, librarian, cafeteria staff, and a Kindergarten teacher! We ate snack in the cafeteria to see what it would be like for lunch next year. The preschoolers are so excited to come to school all day! Thanks for a great year!
Kindergarten
What a year for our Kindergarten!! May has been such a busy month. Not only have we wrapped up and reflected on our learning in the classroom, we've also had many opportunities to celebrate our growth!
We sang our little hearts out in our music concert, and proudly walked across the stage to receive our diplomas. We enjoyed ourselves at the zoo as well as at fun day. What a great end to a busy year of growing and learning.
Congratulations, Kindergarteners! 1st grade, here we come!!
First Grade
Students enjoyed seventh graders coming in to read and interact with them. The students worked on end of the year booklets to write and draw about their favorite first grade memories. The first graders had a wonderful year and are very excited for summer and the start of second grade. Have a safe and super summer, everyone!
Second Grade
Our final full month of school has come to an end. Second graders have been working hard and the month has flown by.
April ended with the excitement of the school carnival, and we, the second grade teachers, were able to share a special lunch with the students who won our pizza lunch raffle. We also spent a warm sunny day at Carpenter Nature Center. Here, we learned about animals and their adaptations in the environment. This trip involved a lot of outside time and hands-on learning.
Much of May was focused on spring assessments. All students took the MAP tests in reading and math and did a great job. We saw a lot of growth from fall scores, which was exciting. There was also reading benchmark testing, and our DRA (reading level) tests. At this time of year, it is fun to see how much more they know than at the beginning of the year.
We are looking forward to the last few days of second grade with our classes. This year sure went fast!
Third Grade
We are wrapping up a fun and successful year! We had our MN Zoo field trip on Wednesday, May 30th. Thank you to all of the chaperones for helping make this a successful trip.
We recently wrapped up our "Structures of Life" science unit on crayfish. The kids enjoyed observing, holding, and learning about these unique creatures. We ended the unit by having crayfish races outside!
Our 3rd grade pen pals from St. Ambrose of Woodbury joined us for an afternoon of games and activities on Thursday. We wrote letters back and forth all year and it was fun to finally meet them!
We are so proud of how much growth the third graders made this year and know they will do great in 4th grade! Have a fun-filled summer!
Fourth Grade
Fourth graders have been super busy finishing up last minute Art projects, Literature Circle books, battling some challenging Math problems, doing experiments and learning about how to keep ourselves and others safe.
Students are leaving fourth grade with their heads full of new knowledge and ready to tackle all that is ahead for them in 5th grade.
We are excited for the summer break but ready to defeat 5th grade when the time comes.
Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is looking forward to celebrating a successful 2017-18 school year! There will be a celebration for 5th graders on Wednesday, June 6th from 11:30-1:15. The celebration will include a slideshow, pizza party lunch, and ice cream for dessert. Parents, if your schedule allows, you are welcome to join the students for viewing the slideshow from 11:30-12:00. Parents who attend will form a “TUNNEL” to welcome the students into the celebration. Please arrive by 11:25 if you wish to be a part of the tunnel.
Also, come and cheer on your fifth grader (almost 6th grader) as they leave Pine Bend for the last time as a student. Join all of the students and staff cheering for them as they walk the halls and exit the school.
When: June 7
Time: about 11:30 (Note: lasts about 5 minutes)
Where: The halls of Pine Bend— students will exit the side doors by the buses (this is a good place to cheer and snap a picture)
Music
Thank you for all the beautiful memories this year! Your kids are a blessing and we are honored to be a part of their lives. Your support has been amazing this year and we look forward to next year and all the excitement it will hold.
May your summer be full of music.

Physical Education
In physical education classes, students are finishing up the school year by staying active!! All grade levels have been working on team sports such as: kickball, baseball and softball. As we wrap up the school year, students will focus on golf skills, track and field activities and Frisbee. We would like to wish everyone a wonderful summer and please stay active!
5 Tips for Family Fitness Fun
- Start a log of daily fitness activities and help all family members find something that makes them feel successful
- Be sure to warm up, stay flexible by stretching and cool down following your workout.
- Use physical activity rather than food as a reward (e.g. family goes skating)
- Park the car as far away from the entrance as possible.
- Dig and plant in the garden... help everyone plant their own vegetables, fruits, and flowers.
I never could have achieved the success that I have without setting physical activity and health goals. -Bonnie Blair
